Paramount and Activision announced a live-action Call of Duty feature film in September 2025. Later reports identify Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan as its creative team, place it in the Modern Warfare universe, and give it a currently scheduled theatrical release date of June 30, 2028. A specific game plot, cast, or character lineup has not been established in the cited coverage.
What Paramount and Activision announced
On September 2, 2025, Paramount announced that it would develop, produce, and distribute a live-action feature film based on the Call of Duty franchise, in partnership with Activision. The announcement described the adaptation as intended for both existing fans and newcomers. It did not name a director, writer, release date, story, or cast.
Paramount chairman and CEO David Ellison called the project “a dream come true,” describing himself as a lifelong fan. Activision president Rob Kostich said the companies aimed to make a movie that would appeal to the franchise’s community while also exciting new fans. Does the movie adapt a Modern Warfare game?
Not on the basis of the setting report alone. TheWrap’s description places the film in the Modern Warfare universe, but that does not establish that it retells a particular game’s campaign, uses specific characters, or follows a known sequence of events. Until plot or casting details are announced, it is more accurate to call this a film set in that universe than a confirmed adaptation of a particular Modern Warfare game.
That distinction also answers the question of what could make the movie specifically Call of Duty rather than simply a contemporary war film: the reported universe provides a franchise connection, but the details that would make that connection concrete on screen have not yet been announced.

Why the franchise is a major film property
Call of Duty began in 2003 as a World War II game, according to the Associated Press. Paramount’s 2025 announcement said the franchise had sold more than 500 million copies globally and described it as the best-selling video game series in the United States for 16 consecutive years. The most useful updates will be those that clarify what the Modern Warfare setting means in practice: whether the story is original or draws on a particular game, which characters appear, and who joins the cast. A confirmed release schedule or later changes to the currently reported June 30, 2028 date would also help establish the film’s production timeline.
