The current exam requires no specific degree, work experience, or professional-development hours. It is a 50-question, 75-minute, remotely proctored exam. IIBA’s current fee page lists the exam at $395 USD, with first-year membership included.
ECBA can provide structure and a résumé signal, but it is not a license, job guarantee, or substitute for practical evidence. Its strongest use is alongside a small portfolio of requirements, process maps, stakeholder analysis, or other business-analysis work.

What is the ECBA certification?
ECBA stands for Entry Certificate in Business Analysis. It is issued by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) and is designed to demonstrate foundational business-analysis knowledge, skills, and behaviors.
IIBA places ECBA at the foundation of its certification pathway:

- Foundational: ECBA
- Core: CCBA and CBAP
- Specialized: AAC, CBDA, CCA, and CPOA
“Entry-level” means that prior professional experience is not required. It does not mean the exam is automatically easy or that passing proves you can handle every business analyst role independently.
Business analysts help organizations understand problems and opportunities, work with stakeholders, define needs, analyze requirements, and evaluate possible solutions. ECBA introduces the frameworks and vocabulary used for that work.
See IIBA’s certification pathway.
Who can take the ECBA?
According to IIBA’s current certification FAQ, there are no specific ECBA requirements for:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Business-analysis work experience
- A particular degree or level of education
- Professional-development hours
You must still agree to IIBA’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Professional Standards, certification terms, and required attestations.
That makes ECBA a reasonable option for students, recent graduates, career changers, and people already performing BA-like work under another title. Potential candidates include project coordinators, operations professionals, customer-success staff, testers, quality-assurance specialists, data analysts, consultants, and product-support employees.
It may be especially relevant when target job postings mention IIBA, BABOK, requirements analysis, elicitation, stakeholder management, or business-analysis methods. No BA, MBA, or other particular degree is required by IIBA.

What does the current ECBA exam cover?
The May 2026 ECBA Handbook describes the exam as:
| Feature | Current detail |
|---|---|
| Questions | 50 |
| Time limit | 75 minutes |
| Question types | Standard multiple-choice and situation-based questions |
| Delivery | Online remote proctoring |
| Content basis | The Business Analysis Standard and the BABOK Guide |
The exam is organized into nine domains. The first three are grounded in The Business Analysis Standard; the remaining six draw on the BABOK Guide and the Business Analysis Core Concept Model (BACCM). For the precise domain percentages and activity statements, use the current ECBA Exam Blueprint and Reference Map rather than an older study guide.
Recommended Free Tools
Core areas include:
- The purpose, value, and context of business analysis
- Needs, problems, opportunities, value, requirements, and designs
- Stakeholder identification and engagement
- Elicitation and collaboration
- Requirements traceability, prioritization, approval, and change
- Solution evaluation
- Business-analysis techniques and underlying competencies
- Applying the framework to scenarios and choosing an appropriate next step
This is not primarily a software-tool certification. It does not certify you in SQL, data science, product management, project management, software development, or an employer’s internal process. IIBA’s current materials also make clear that practical application and situation-based reasoning matter; the exam is not simply a test of memorized BABOK definitions.
How much does ECBA cost?
IIBA’s current certification-fees page lists the ECBA exam at $395 USD. The ECBA landing page advertises the package as “$395 or less,” depending on circumstances such as region or student status.
| Item | Current information |
|---|---|
| ECBA exam | $395 USD listed by IIBA |
| Application fee | Not required |
| Recertification fee | Not required for ECBA on the current fee page |
| First-year membership | Included with exam purchase |
| Rewrite fee | $95 for members; $250 for non-members, as listed |
| Student pricing | Available; the ECBA page advertises $315 or less depending on region |
IIBA says the advertised package includes membership, the ECBA exam, a practice exam, and the ECBA learning journey. The checkout total can vary by region, student status, account status, taxes, or promotions. Confirm the amount immediately before payment; prices can change.
The handbook says a refund request may be made within 30 days of IIBA receiving payment, but the eligible ECBA refund amount is $145 USD. That does not mean the full $395 purchase is automatically refundable.

The current process is broadly:
- Create or sign in to your IIBA account.
- Open Certification.
- Select My Certifications.
- Select ECBA.
- Purchase the exam.
- Review and accept the attestations, code, handbook, and certification terms.
- Schedule through PSI.
- Run the PSI compatibility check before exam day.
The May 2026 handbook says you have six months from the date IIBA receives exam payment to schedule and take the exam.
IIBA’s exam-information page says exams generally must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. Cancellation or rescheduling generally must also happen at least 48 hours before the appointment. A no-show can result in forfeiting the fee.
How to prepare for ECBA
Use the official exam references as the organizing system for your preparation:
- ECBA Handbook
- Current ECBA Exam Blueprint
- ECBA Reference Map
- IIBA’s Business Analysis Standard
- The BABOK Guide
- Business Analysis Core Concept Model
- IIBA KnowledgeHub
- Official ECBA practice exam and learning journey
Members can access relevant IIBA material through KnowledgeHub. Candidates who prefer instruction can compare providers on IIBA’s endorsed training page. Verify that any course is currently endorsed and aligned with the May 2026 handbook and current blueprint.
Build exam knowledge and job evidence separately
Exam preparation means learning the framework, terminology, domains, and scenario logic. Job preparation means practicing how to discover, document, analyze, communicate, and validate information in a real or realistic setting.
To connect the two, create a small portfolio project around a familiar problem, such as improving a college enrollment process, reducing customer-support delays, or replacing a manual expense workflow. Include:
- A problem statement and definition of value
- A stakeholder map and engagement approach
- Current-state and future-state process maps
- A requirements catalog
- User stories with acceptance criteria, where appropriate
- A prioritization matrix
- A traceability or change log
- A short recommendation presentation
Do not present invented project outcomes as professional experience. Label the work as a portfolio case study and explain your assumptions, alternatives, and decisions.
Rank #4
The official practice exam can help with terminology and question-style familiarity, but IIBA states that it does not guarantee success. Avoid relying only on generic interview-question lists or memorizing isolated definitions.

Remote proctoring creates practical risks that short ECBA summaries often overlook. Before paying, make sure you can meet the testing conditions.
- Use a personal computer where possible, rather than a company laptop with security controls.
- Run the PSI compatibility check and test your webcam, microphone, browser, and internet connection.
- IIBA advises using Chrome.
- Avoid corporate VPNs, restrictive firewalls, and networks with VoIP restrictions.
- Prepare a current, signed, government-issued photo ID.
- Make sure the name on your ID, IIBA account, and testing record matches exactly.
- Use a quiet, private room and clear unauthorized materials from the desk.
- Arrive on time; lateness or a missed appointment can jeopardize the fee.
A compatibility check reduces risk but does not guarantee a trouble-free session. If you need accommodations, request them before scheduling; IIBA says arranging them may take up to 10 business days.
The new exam is available in English. IIBA says previous-version translated exams remain available in Chinese, Standard French, Canadian French, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese. Confirm the available version and language before purchasing; do not assume every language uses the current exam format.
Does ECBA expire?
IIBA’s current fee page lists ECBA recertification as not required. That policy is specific to ECBA and should not be generalized to CCBA, CBAP, or specialized IIBA certifications, which may have different maintenance rules.
Is ECBA worth the cost?
There is no universal answer. At $395 USD, ECBA is a meaningful expense for a beginner, so compare it with the value of what else the same money could buy: a portfolio project, technical training, mentoring, or an endorsed course.

| ECBA is more compelling when… | Consider another priority when… |
|---|---|
| You need structure and accountability. | You expect the credential alone to create interviews. |
| Target employers mention IIBA, BABOK, or requirements work. | Target roles emphasize SQL, statistics, automation, UX research, or a specific domain. |
| You are changing careers and need a recognized signal of focused preparation. | You have no practical examples to discuss. |
| You can afford it without sacrificing hands-on learning. | The fee would consume your entire development budget. |
| You will turn the material into portfolio artifacts. | You already have substantial BA experience and may qualify for a higher-level credential. |
Before buying, search several target job postings for IIBA, BABOK, elicitation, stakeholder analysis, requirements, process improvement, SQL, and domain-specific requirements. Employer recognition varies by industry, geography, and company. IIBA describes ECBA as a globally recognized credential and promotes possible benefits such as confidence and employability, but those claims should not be treated as a guarantee of interviews, salary growth, or career progression.
ECBA versus other options
Portfolio first, without certification
This is often the better route for someone with a very limited budget or strong self-discipline. It provides direct evidence of how you think and communicate, though it offers less external signaling than a certification.
IIBA-endorsed training
An endorsed course may suit learners who need an instructor, a schedule, or accountability. It costs more than self-study in many cases, and provider quality and pricing vary, so check current endorsement and blueprint alignment.
CCBA and CBAP
CCBA is aimed at practitioners with roughly two to three years of business-analysis experience and specified work-history, professional-development, and reference requirements. CBAP is intended for senior practitioners with at least five years of BA work history and substantial experience-hour, professional-development, and reference requirements. Neither is an entry-level substitute. Check IIBA’s current eligibility rules before planning either exam.
Specialized credentials and other training
IIBA’s AAC, CBDA, CCA, and CPOA serve agile analysis, business data analytics, cybersecurity analysis, and product ownership paths. They are not substitutes for general entry-level BA foundations. Depending on your target role, an agile credential, process-improvement program, vendor-specific analytics course, or technical training may be more directly useful. Verify current rules and prices separately before purchasing another certification.
What ECBA does—and does not—prove
Passing ECBA demonstrates that you have learned a foundational business-analysis framework and can apply it to the types of questions included in the exam. It can help you explain concepts such as stakeholders, needs, requirements, prioritization, elicitation, and solution evaluation.
It does not independently prove that you can:
- Lead difficult stakeholder conversations
- Facilitate agreement among conflicting groups
- Write effective requirements for a real product or process
- Use SQL, analytics, modeling tools, or automation
- Understand a particular industry or business domain
- Deliver measurable project improvements
- Perform successfully in a specific employer’s environment
That distinction matters financially as well as professionally: paying for an exam is not the same as investing in a complete route to employment.
