In May 2025, eBay announced the closure of TCGplayer’s Syracuse, New York, office. Regional news reports said 220 Syracuse employees were slated for layoffs as operations shifted to Louisville, Kentucky. That is a reported planned layoff count—not a confirmed final tally of completed job losses.
How many TCGplayer employees were affected?
Bay News 9/Spectrum News reported that 220 employees at the Syracuse office were expected to be laid off over the summer of 2025. Central Current also reported that 220 workers were affected by the move to Kentucky. The accounts describe planned layoffs; they do not establish how many separations ultimately occurred.
New York State Senator Christopher J. Ryan separately said the closure would cost the area “over 300 local jobs.” That is Ryan’s estimate of the local impact, not a revised count of TCGplayer employees slated for layoff. The available accounts do not explain whether his larger figure includes indirect or other local effects, and no authoritative study located quantified the broader economic impact.
Why was eBay closing the Syracuse office?
Contemporaneous reporting connected the closure with a shift of TCGplayer operations to Louisville, Kentucky. eBay had acquired TCGplayer in 2022, according to its 2023 Form 10-K. In later company communication, eBay described investment in a Louisville site supporting eBay and TCGplayer collectibles operations and jobs. That later investment provides context for Louisville, but does not establish the precise timeline or final disposition of the Syracuse work.

The sources available do not provide a detailed primary explanation from eBay for the specific 2025 closure decision. The reported operational shift is documented; the company’s full rationale is not established by the cited material.
What role did the union dispute play?
Contemporaneous coverage described TCGplayer employees as unionized with the Communication Workers of America and reported employee concerns that the closure was connected to union activity. Senator Ryan characterized the move as retaliatory. These are reported concerns and an attributed allegation, not an established finding about eBay’s motive. The sources reviewed do not resolve whether union activity caused or influenced the decision.
