The airline’s agreement covers 237 aircraft orders; it does not announce a retrofit for its existing fleet. Separately, easyJet opened its three-aircraft Newcastle base in March 2026, its 11th UK base.
What easyJet’s 237-aircraft seat order means
In its 23 March 2026 announcement, easyJet said the Mirus Kestrel economy seat would be fitted to new A320neo and A321neo aircraft deliveries from 2028. The stated scope is 237 aircraft orders, not 237 aircraft already fitted with the seat. The release does not give a delivery-by-delivery schedule or explain how passengers can identify a Kestrel-equipped aircraft when booking. easyJet’s announcement
That timing matters if you are choosing a flight based on cabin comfort: the announced change concerns future deliveries, and the airline has not specified which routes or booking dates will first have the new seat.
How “two extra inches” differs from seat pitch
easyJet describes the Kestrel as providing up to two inches of additional legroom through its ergonomic shape and improved knee and shin clearance, while keeping seat pitch unchanged. Legroom is the space a passenger experiences around the legs; seat pitch is the distance between corresponding points on successive rows. The airline did not publish a pitch measurement or independent passenger-trial results, so the two-inch figure should be read as easyJet’s stated design benefit, not a separately verified outcome.
#1 Best Overall
- CloudAir Support: This airplane seat cushion is equipped with 49 pressure reducing airbags that can evenly distribute weight, effectively reducing pressure on the coccyx and buttocks and relieving fatigue caused by prolonged sitting(✅ Correct: Inflate to 50–60% capacity; the air chamber should be full but yield noticeably when pressed by hand. On an airplane, 30–40% inflation is recommended.❌ Incorrect: Do not over-inflate until rigid; sitting on an over-inflated cushion will be uncomfortable and negate the pressure-relieving effect.)
- Built in Inflation Pump Design: Compared with other inflatable seat cushions, it does not rely on an external inflation pump and is very convenient to use. Simply press the surface inflation button repeatedly(Tip for easier inflation: Start by blowing one breath of air in, then use the manual pump to adjust the inflation level.)
- Adjustable Comfort: After inflation is complete, you can press the surface adjustment button to slowly release the gas inside the cushion to change its support. You can adjust to the best comfort according to your actual feelings(✅When storing, be sure to open the exhaust valve to release all the air.)
- Portable and Widely Used: When storing, first exhaust the air inside the cushion, then fold the cushion and put it into a storage bag. It is very portable and is an ideal companion for long-distance flights, travel, office work, driving, camping and other scenarios
- Practical Three-layer Structure Design: The smooth surface of the fabric is skin friendly and breathable. The high elasticity and durable TPU layer in the middle can withstand a weight of up to 440 pounds. Paired with a reliable non-slip bottom, it firmly grips chair surfaces and can remain stable even when it bumps or moves suddenly
Why easyJet says the lighter seat matters
The airline says the Kestrel is more than 20% lighter than the seats it currently uses. It estimates a saving of up to 500 kg per aircraft on larger models, fuel savings of over 12,936 tonnes annually and annual CO2 savings of 40,513 tonnes. These are easyJet’s estimates, not independently verified reductions; the release does not provide the calculation method or a separate test result.
easyJet also says the seat is approximately 98% recyclable at end of life and is designed with fewer parts and lower maintenance needs. Those points describe the airline’s stated operational and end-of-life rationale. They do not establish a measured effect on ticket prices, fares, or an individual passenger’s environmental footprint.

What opened at Newcastle—and what the jobs figures mean
Newcastle became easyJet’s 11th UK base when the airline opened its three-aircraft operation there in March 2026. The opening is a separate network investment from the seat agreement, even though both reflect plans to expand or update the airline’s operations. easyJet’s base-opening announcement
When it announced the plan in 2025, easyJet forecast around 130 direct roles and around 1,200 jobs supported across the UK. Those figures were estimates attached to the plan, not a final count of jobs created. easyJet’s 2025 base plan

Routes and holiday packages from Newcastle
In June 2025, easyJet announced 11 new routes for summer 2026 and said holiday packages for the new destinations were on sale. It described the expansion as more than doubling the destinations served from Newcastle. easyJet’s route announcement

What passengers can—and cannot—count on today
- For future aircraft: easyJet has announced Kestrel seats on new A320neo and A321neo deliveries from 2028, within the 237-aircraft order scope.
- For legroom: up to two inches more is easyJet’s claim about the seat design; seat pitch is said to remain unchanged.
- For existing aircraft: the announcement does not say they will be retrofitted.
- For a specific booking: no route-level rollout timetable or booking method for identifying the seat is stated.
- For Newcastle travel: the base is open, but live schedules and package choices should be checked for the dates you plan to travel.
The public announcement includes statements from easyJet’s chief operating officer and Mirus’s chief executive, but no independent seat test or passenger study. The legroom, weight, fuel, emissions and recyclability figures should therefore be understood as claims or estimates attributed to the companies, rather than independent findings.
