That was roughly 1,000 of the company’s approximately 3,500 UK employees at the time—more than one-quarter and, depending on rounding, close to one-third. Dyson later confirmed its global reorganisation included a redundancy programme, but it has not publicly confirmed that exactly 1,000 UK employees were made redundant.
What Dyson announced in July 2024
In an employee email on July 9, 2024, CEO Hanno Kirner said Dyson was proposing organisational changes that “may result in redundancies.” The company said employees whose roles were at risk would be supported through the process. Its public statement did not say that 1,000 people had already been dismissed. Dyson’s business update also did not identify affected departments, job titles, individual sites or a final redundancy total.
The distinction matters: “around 1,000 jobs at risk” was the figure reported at the time, not a confirmed count of completed dismissals.
How large were the proposed cuts?
Contemporary reporting put the number at about 1,000 jobs against a UK workforce of roughly 3,500. That is approximately 29% using those rounded figures. It is therefore reasonable to describe the proposal as affecting more than one-quarter of the UK workforce, while “nearly one-third” is an approximate headline description rather than an exact share. The estimate concerned UK jobs, not 1,000 jobs worldwide. BBC reporting and The Independent’s account reported the scale of the proposal.

Why Dyson said it was restructuring
Dyson described the decision as part of a global review of its organisation after rapid growth. It cited increasingly competitive markets and the accelerating pace of innovation, saying it needed to remain entrepreneurial and agile. Those were the company’s stated reasons; it did not present the UK proposals as a response solely to financial losses or insolvency.
“Cost-cutting” is a fair description of one likely effect of reducing roles, but Dyson’s own explanation focused on organisational structure and competitiveness. The company did not publish a specific savings target for the programme. Reporting said the review had begun before the July 4, 2024 UK general election, so the timing does not establish that the election caused the decision. The Independent covered that timing.
What Dyson’s finances showed
Dyson remained profitable in 2024, but its reported results were substantially weaker than in 2023. In its results announcement, the company reported revenue of £6.57 billion, down from £7.1 billion; EBITDA of about £0.94 billion, down from £1.4 billion; and profit before tax of £561 million, down from £1.1 billion. Those figures show a difficult year, not a company reporting losses. Dyson identified restructuring as one of several exceptional or one-off issues affecting the year. Dyson’s 2024 results announcement gives its figures and explanation.
The company also cited slower economic growth, weaker consumer confidence in some markets, currency movements—particularly in Asia and Turkey—and a Philippines factory fire that affected beauty-product supply. It said it was rebalancing some direct-retail activity toward relationships with key retail partners. The published information does not establish that any one of these factors alone caused the UK job proposal.

Which UK locations were mentioned?
Contemporary coverage identified Dyson’s UK presence in Wiltshire, including its Malmesbury base, as well as Bristol and London. The announcement did not publish a site-by-site allocation, so there is no reliable public basis here for assigning a particular number of proposed redundancies to any of those locations. BBC reporting and LBC’s report discuss the locations.
Was Dyson leaving the UK or closing its research work?
The available information points to a reduction in UK employment, not a complete withdrawal from Britain. Dyson continued to describe UK research, development, design and engineering as important, including its Bristol research-and-development presence and the Dyson Institute. Its 2024 results also discussed continuing investment and activity in the UK. That does not prove that every R&D role was protected: no public breakdown establishes which functions or teams were affected.
The distinction is important for local workers and job seekers. A company can retain a significant research and engineering presence while employing fewer people overall, and a strategic commitment to R&D is not the same as a guarantee of employment for a particular team. The Guardian’s contemporaneous report covered the UK workforce reduction and the continuing R&D context.
What happened after the announcement?
Dyson’s 2024 results, published in 2025, confirmed that its global reorganisation included a redundancy programme. In a December 2025 essay, Dyson said it employed about 2,000 people in the UK. That later figure is consistent with a smaller UK workforce than the roughly 3,500 cited in 2024, but the two rounded totals do not show how many people left through redundancies rather than attrition, hiring changes, transfers or changes in reporting scope. Neither statement provides a definitive final count of UK employees made redundant under the programme. Dyson’s December 2025 essay states the later UK headcount.

Dyson’s results for 2025, published March 26, 2026, reported revenue of £6.13 billion, EBITDA of £1.11 billion, operating profit of £0.6 billion, more than £400 million in R&D investment and 13 new products launched during the year. These later figures provide business context; they do not establish the final UK redundancy count or show that the 2024 cuts caused subsequent performance. Dyson’s 2025 results announcement lists those figures.

- The final number of UK employees made redundant through the 2024 programme.
- Which departments, job titles or individual sites accounted for the proposed roles.
- Whether particular UK research, engineering or design teams were affected.
- Individual severance terms, which were not detailed in the public announcement.
For context, contemporary reports also said Dyson cut approximately 900 jobs during the pandemic, including about 600 in the UK and 300 overseas. Those were earlier cuts and should not be added to the 2024 proposal as though they were one programme. The Independent and LBC reported the earlier figures.
What the cuts mean for UK technology jobs
The episode illustrates the difference between keeping high-value research and development in Britain and maintaining a large UK workforce across all business functions. Dyson’s continued emphasis on UK engineering and R&D does not negate the scale of the proposed employment reduction; equally, the reduction does not by itself show that the company abandoned its UK innovation base. Without a final headcount and a breakdown by function, claims that engineering was spared—or that only administrative jobs were cut—go beyond what the public information establishes.
As of August 18, 2026, the clearest account is that Dyson proposed changes affecting about 1,000 UK roles in July 2024, later confirmed a redundancy programme as part of its global reorganisation, and has not publicly established that exactly 1,000 UK redundancies were completed.
