Duke Energy’s renewable-energy expansion is a set of state-specific projects and resource plans—not one companywide construction schedule. The clearest current growth is in solar and battery storage: Florida has a large operating solar fleet and further additions planned, while the Carolinas’ newer plans set out solar and storage targets and identify individual battery projects. Wind and pumped storage remain part of the planning picture, but the company’s 2025 Carolinas plan changed its view of their timing or economics.
What Duke Energy is building—and what is still a plan
The figures below cover different utilities, states, filing dates and project statuses. An operating facility, an announced project, an open procurement and a long-range target are not interchangeable. Nor should the totals be added together: the sources do not establish matching baselines or accounting scopes across Florida and the Carolinas.
| Area or project | Technology and capacity | Status and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Florida portfolio | About 1,500 MW at more than 25 solar sites | Duke Energy Florida reported these sites operating in 2025. [Company announcement, July 2025] |
| Florida additions | 12 solar sites adding 900 MW | Planned for 2025–2027; not all are necessarily in service. [Company announcement, July 2025] |
| Carolinas resource plan | 4,000 MW solar and 5,600 MW battery storage by 2034 | Targets in Duke Energy’s proposed 2025 plan, not completed capacity. [2025 plan announcement] |
| Allen, North Carolina | 50 MW / four hours; another 167 MW / four hours planned | Duke said the first battery began serving customers in November 2025; the second was described as planned in January 2026. [Company announcement, January 2026] |
| Riverbend, North Carolina | 115 MW / four hours | Announced project; construction expected in late 2026 and service in late 2027. [Company announcement, January 2026] |
| South Carolina resource plan | 400 MW standalone storage RFP, alongside solar and solar-plus-storage procurement | Plan announcement in August 2026; the company said a hearing was scheduled for April 2027 and an order by June 2027. [Company announcement, August 2026] |
Florida: operating solar fleet with more growth projected
Duke Energy Florida reported that more than 25 solar sites were producing approximately 1,500 MW in 2025. The company also planned 12 additional sites, representing 900 MW, across 2025–2027. These are separate figures: the first describes the reported operating portfolio, while the second describes planned additions.
Looking farther ahead, Duke Energy Florida projected more than 6,100 MW of utility-scale solar by the end of 2033. That is a company projection, not a statement that this capacity is already built or that each project has received approval. The company described solar as part of its “all of the above” generation strategy; that is the utility’s characterization, not an independent assessment of costs or customer-bill effects. The Carolinas: newer plan targets solar and batteries
Duke Energy’s October 2025 Carolinas Resource Plan set targets of 4,000 MW of solar and 5,600 MW of battery storage by 2034. These are plan targets subject to the planning and regulatory process, not a report of installed capacity. The plan’s long-range totals should also be distinguished from specific projects with announced schedules.
Battery projects at former coal-plant sites
Duke said a 50-MW battery with four hours of storage at the former Allen coal plant began serving customers in November 2025. In January 2026, the company announced a second Allen system rated at 167 MW for four hours and a 115-MW, four-hour battery at Riverbend. Riverbend construction was expected to begin in late 2026, with service expected in late 2027; those dates are an announced schedule, not confirmation of completion. The projects illustrate reuse of former power-plant sites, but the announcements alone do not establish project costs or customer savings. [Duke Energy, January 2026]

The same January announcement cited a projection of 6,550 MW of additional batteries by 2035 from the 2025 Carolinas plan. This is a separate planning figure from the plan’s 5,600-MW battery target by 2034; the announcement does not make their scopes directly comparable. Treat each as its own dated plan statement rather than combining them into a single build total.
Wind and pumped storage have a changed outlook
The 2025 Carolinas plan said wind was not economically viable for customers through 2040 and deferred a potential second power block at the Bad Creek pumped-storage facility to a 2040 target. These are the company’s planning assumptions in that plan, not a claim that wind or pumped storage is impossible or absent from all future options. Duke’s North Carolina president described the plan as intended to expand the generation portfolio while meeting growth needs; that statement is the company’s rationale, not an independent finding about reliability or bills. South Carolina: procurement and projects in the 2026 plan announcement
Duke Energy’s August 2026 announcement described a South Carolina filing that builds on solar work already underway. It reported solar facilities completed or under construction, solar and solar-plus-storage requests for proposals, and storage projects in service. It also included an RFP for 400 MW of standalone storage. An RFP solicits bids; it does not mean a project has been selected, built or placed in service.
The company said a hearing was scheduled for April 2027 and an order was expected by June 2027. Those dates describe the announced regulatory schedule at the time of the release. Duke’s South Carolina president framed the plan around infrastructure for population and business growth; that is an executive statement, not independent evidence of project economics. Why older North Carolina figures differ
A 2024 North Carolina Utilities Commission decision, as summarized by Duke Energy, set earlier benchmarks of 6,700 MW total solar and 2,700 MW total batteries by 2031, plus 1,200 MW of onshore wind by 2033. These figures belong to a different filing and regulatory context from the company’s later 2025 Carolinas plan, which set different solar and battery targets and said wind was not economically viable through 2040. They should be read as dated benchmarks, not as a current unified plan for every Duke Energy utility. [Duke Energy’s summary of the NCUC decision, October 2024]

How to read the project numbers
- Check the geography. Florida utility figures, South Carolina filings and Carolinas-wide plans cover different jurisdictions.
- Check the status verb. “Operating” or “in service” differs from “planned,” “projected,” “under construction” and “RFP.”
- Check the plan date and target year. A later plan can revise an earlier filing’s assumptions without turning the older regulatory decision into a factual error.
- Do not infer consumer costs or returns from capacity. The cited company materials do not provide a comparable independent analysis of cost per megawatt-hour, lifecycle emissions, land use or customer bills.
