Dry weather was already stressing corn in northern La Pampa and western Buenos Aires province, Argentina, according to the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange’s weekly report published January 8, 2026. At that time, the exchange estimated 7.8 million hectares of corn planted and projected a 58 million metric ton harvest for the 2025/26 season. Rain discussed in the report was forecast, not confirmed rainfall.

“The lack of rainfall in recent weeks in northern La Pampa and western Buenos Aires province is already impacting crops,” the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange said in its weekly agriculture report, as quoted by Reuters. The report identified these areas as experiencing crop stress; it did not quantify the damage or provide a revised yield estimate.
Reuters published its account by Maximilian Heath on January 9, 2026, from Buenos Aires, reporting on the exchange’s January 8 update. The figures describe estimates and expectations at that time, not final results.
What the exchange estimated for corn
The exchange estimated that farmers had planted 7.8 million hectares of corn for the 2025/26 season and projected production of 58 million metric tons. The report did not say that dry conditions had changed either figure, nor did it establish the crop’s eventual yield or harvest.

Rain was expected, not confirmed
The exchange forecast widespread rain in Argentine agricultural areas in the days after its report, including 50–100 millimeters for the western agricultural frontier. That range was a forecast, not a measured total. The Reuters account does not establish whether the rain arrived or how much fell.
Why the forecast mattered for soybeans too
The exchange said rain would also benefit soybeans, particularly early-planted fields in important yield-development stages. As of the January 8 report, it estimated that 88.3% of the soybean area had been planted, with total area estimated at 17.6 million hectares and production projected at 48.5 million tons.

Other harvest figures in the report
The exchange reported that the 2025/26 wheat harvest was 98.5% complete and maintained its production forecast at 27.8 million tons. It also said the barley harvest was complete at 5.4 million tons, which the report described as the largest barley harvest in ten years.
