Those reports describe a 2025 episode; they do not confirm whether the Balcatta bakery is operating now.
Why Dough Street announced a temporary closure
On 25 July 2025, PerthNow reported that Dough Street, a gluten-free bakery in Balcatta, had temporarily closed while co-owner Mel was hospitalized. In a statement quoted by the outlet, co-owner Nathan said: “This is not a decision I make lightly. Mel is currently in hospital with a mystery illness, and despite the best efforts of multiple medical teams, we still don’t have clear answers.”

Nathan also said his priority was to be with her, “advocating for her and supporting her through this.” The report said Dough Street had opened to the public in mid-2024 and that its products were entirely gluten free, attributing that focus to Mel’s gluten intolerance and Nathan’s coeliac disease. PerthNow’s 25 July report quoted Nathan’s announcement.
What the follow-up said about Mel and reopening
In a report published on 28 July 2025, PerthNow said Mel had spent five days in hospital and was recovering. It reported that Dough Street expected to welcome customers back on Wednesday—the planned reopening date in that 2025 update, not confirmation of its present schedule.

The follow-up attributed the medical explanation to Nathan’s social-media statement. As quoted by PerthNow, he said doctors had identified “a rare and severe inflammatory response” associated with a recently inserted IUD. This is an account attributed to Nathan in the report, not an independent medical finding; it does not establish a general medical risk. PerthNow’s 28 July follow-up covered the recovery and planned reopening.
Is Dough Street open now?
The 2025 reports establish the temporary closure and the owners’ planned return that week, but they do not settle the bakery’s operating status on 8 October 2026. Dough Street’s official contact page lists opening hours of Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those website listings are not a dated confirmation that the bakery is currently open, so check with the business before making a trip.
