Re:

Do People Get Their Money Back If You Decline a Steam Gift?

Steam automatically refunds the purchaser when a recipient declines an unredeemed gift. Unanswered gifts are cancelled and refunded after 30 days; redeemed gifts follow a separate request process.

Yes. If you decline a delivered Steam gift before redeeming it, Steam automatically processes a refund to the purchaser’s payment method and emails the purchaser that the gift was declined. The refund is not necessarily visible in the purchaser’s account immediately.

What happens when you decline an unredeemed Steam gift?

Steam’s Steam Gifts FAQ says selecting “Decline Gift” automatically processes a refund to the purchaser’s payment method. Steam also sends the purchaser an email notification. The recipient does not need to submit a separate refund request for this decline workflow.

This automatic process applies to a gift that has been delivered but not redeemed. It is distinct from a refund request for a game that has already been added to an account.

What if you do nothing?

A recipient has 30 days after delivery to accept or decline a gift. If they take no action within that period, Steam says it automatically cancels the purchase and refunds the original payment method. The deadline and outcome are described in Steam’s gift policy.

What changes if the gift was redeemed?

After a recipient redeems a gift, the purchaser cannot use the decline workflow. The recipient must first approve a refund and removal of the gift from their account through Steam Support, including permission for the original purchaser to request the refund. The purchaser then submits a refund request through Steam Support’s Purchases flow. See Steam’s Steam Gifts FAQ.

How long does the money take to appear?

An automatic decline refund does not mean the purchaser will see money back instantly or necessarily as a card credit. For approved refunds, Steam says it returns funds to the original payment method when supported; if that method cannot receive the refund, Steam Wallet credit may be used. Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear, while Steam Wallet credit typically takes 24–48 hours. Actual posting time can depend on the payment method and financial institution. Details are in Steam’s Common Refund Questions.

How this differs from a regular game refund

Steam’s general game-refund guidance says requests are normally eligible when submitted within 14 days of purchase and the game has been played for less than two hours. Steam may review requests outside those conditions, but they are not the same as declining an unredeemed gift, which Steam describes as automatically triggering a refund. For the standard request process, see How To Request A Refund.

Can a gift be declined across regions?

Some gifts have country or region restrictions. Steam says the allowed countries appear in the gift details, and the countries included in a region can change. Check the gift’s details or Steam’s Region Restrictions on Steam guidance if the recipient is in another country.
