DOT Dashboard Shows What Airlines Commit to Cover When Flights Are Canceled or Delayed

The U.S. DOT dashboard shows which airlines commit to rebooking, meals, hotels, and credits when they cancel or significantly delay a flight, and why those commitments differ from refund rights.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s airline dashboard lets you compare, carrier by carrier, what an airline has committed to provide when it cancels a flight or significantly delays one for reasons within its control. The commitments cover rebooking, meals after long waits, overnight hotels and ground transportation, and some credits or frequent-flyer miles. The dashboard is a comparison and accountability tool. It is not a guarantee that every benefit applies to every disruption.

Which disruptions the dashboard covers

The dashboard is scoped to controllable disruptions, meaning cancellations and significant delays the airline itself causes. DOT’s examples include maintenance or crew problems, cabin cleaning, baggage loading, and fueling. Disruptions outside that category are not covered by the dashboard’s tables, so for those events you should check the airline’s own customer-service plan, which the dashboard links to for each carrier.

The five commitments the tables track

For each carrier, the cancellation and significant-delay tables show whether the airline commits to the following:

  • rebooking you on the same airline at no additional cost;
  • rebooking you on a partner or other airline with which it has an agreement, at no additional cost;
  • providing a meal or meal cash or voucher after a wait of three hours or more, with the table stating any applicable condition;
  • providing a hotel and ground transportation for an overnight disruption;
  • providing cash compensation, a travel credit or voucher, or frequent-flyer miles after a qualifying wait.

The table below shows what each entry means in practice. Where a carrier’s entry differs from the general description, the carrier’s plan controls.

Commitment Condition stated on the dashboard How to read a “yes”
Same-airline rebooking At no additional cost The carrier commits to move you to another of its own flights without a fare charge.
Partner or other-airline rebooking At no additional cost, only where the carrier has an agreement with the other airline Shows a commitment to rebook you elsewhere; it does not mean every partner route is available.
Meal or meal cash/voucher After a wait of three hours or more; the table states any further condition Applies to the wait threshold shown, not to every delay.
Overnight hotel and ground transportation Applies to an overnight disruption Covers lodging and transport between the airport and hotel, subject to the carrier’s plan.
Cash, travel credit or voucher, or frequent-flyer miles After a qualifying wait; the carrier’s plan defines eligibility Tells you the carrier offers some form of compensation, not the amount.

Commitments vary by carrier and sometimes by benefit. In the dashboard’s displayed tables, same-airline rebooking and meal commitments are the most consistent across the listed airlines. Partner rebooking, overnight hotel and transportation, and credit or miles commitments differ more from carrier to carrier, so compare those columns individually.

How to read a “yes” and a red X

  • A “yes” is a reported commitment, with the policy conditions the table and the carrier’s plan attach to it. It is not a blanket assurance for every traveler or every cause.
  • A red X means the airline has not made that commitment in the dashboard. DOT says the airline may still provide the service or amenity in some cases, at its discretion.
  • Accountability: DOT says it will hold airlines accountable if they fail to fulfill the commitments they have listed.

Refund rights are a separate question

The dashboard’s commitments do not change your refund entitlement. If an airline cancels your flight or makes a significant change, and you decline the alternative it offers, you can be entitled to a prompt refund, including on a non-refundable ticket. A refund returns the fare you paid. It is not an amenity or a compensation payment, so a refund does not replace a meal, hotel, or rebooking commitment, and those commitments do not replace a refund.

Compensation beyond a refund is a different matter. DOT’s own FAQ asks, “Am I entitled to money or other compensation beyond a refund from an airline if my flight is significantly delayed or cancelled?” The answer depends on the carrier’s stated commitments and the applicable rules at the time of travel. Earlier, in 2022, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg described a proposed rule this way: “This rule would, for the first time in U.S. history, propose to require airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels, and rebooking in cases where the airline has caused a cancellation or significant delay.” That was a proposal when it was announced, not binding law, so check DOT’s current refund guidance before relying on any compensation requirement.

Scope and currency of the dashboard

  • Market coverage: DOT says the ten largest U.S. airlines and their regional operating partners account for approximately 96 percent of domestic scheduled passenger air traffic. The dashboard page does not state the year for this figure.
  • Refund history: In a 2022 announcement, DOT said it had helped return more than $1 billion in refunds to travelers since 2021. That is historical context, not a current refund total.
  • Last update: The cancellation and delay dashboard was last updated September 11, 2025. Carrier entries and linked plans can change, so confirm the live table and the airline’s current plan before you rely on a specific carrier’s commitment.

What to do when a flight is disrupted

  1. Open the dashboard, filter by the operating carrier, and check the cancellation or significant-delay column that matches your disruption.
  2. Open the airline’s linked customer-service plan and confirm eligibility conditions, such as wait thresholds and any local-resident exclusions, and how to request each benefit.
  3. At the airport or on the airline’s app, ask staff specifically for the meal, hotel, ground transportation, or rebooking commitment that applies to your disruption. Note the agent’s name and the time.
  4. If the flight was canceled or significantly changed and the alternative is unacceptable, request a refund separately from any amenity.
  5. If the airline does not honor a listed commitment, contact the airline first. If the response is unsatisfactory, DOT says you may file a complaint with the Department.

The dashboard tells you what an airline has promised to do. Your position improves when you have that promise in writing and know which of the two remedies you are asking for.
