The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says doorbell footage showed a substance sprayed in the direction of the food; the driver reportedly told detectives she used pepper spray on a spider, not the order. The allegation has not been established in court, and the cited reports do not say the substance was chemically tested.
What the sheriff’s office says happened
According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, one of two customers contacted authorities on December 7, 2025. The couple said they had ordered food through DoorDash shortly after midnight and later experienced burning in their mouths, noses, throats and stomachs, along with vomiting. Those are symptoms the couple reported, not a medical diagnosis documented in the cited accounts.
The sheriff’s office said the customers reviewed doorbell-camera footage. Its December 12 release describes the footage as showing the Dasher place the food on the porch, take a picture, spray a substance from a small keychain aerosol can in the direction of the food, and leave. The release does not report laboratory testing that identified the substance.
Investigators subpoenaed DoorDash records and identified the driver as Kourtney Stevenson; the sheriff’s office says other investigative steps corroborated that identification. The agency’s account is an allegation, not a court finding.

What the driver reportedly said
The sheriff’s office said Stevenson told detectives she was visiting her father in Evansville and working for DoorDash during the visit. She reportedly acknowledged using pepper spray, but said she aimed it at a spider rather than the food.
Detectives disputed that explanation, citing an overnight low of 35°F. That is the sheriff’s office’s stated reasoning, not an independently established finding about whether a spider could have been present.

WFIE reported on December 18, 2025, that Stevenson had been extradited to Vanderburgh County, appeared in court and was released on a $3,500 cash bond. The report said the same four counts remained in the case at that time. That dated update does not establish the case’s present status or its eventual outcome.
