Jai Mani’s departure from Xiaomi’s POCO operation was reported around the same time, but contemporary coverage based the claim on a changed social-media profile—not a formal departure announcement from Mani. The exits prompted speculation about POCO’s future; Xiaomi later announced that POCO would operate independently.
What happened in July 2019?
Two Xiaomi-related personnel changes were reported in July 2019, but they were not announced in the same way. Sung publicly described his departure and next move. Mani’s departure was reported after his profile identified him as a former POCO and Xiaomi India product manager. The available accounts do not establish that the two men left together, coordinated their decisions, or shared a reason.
Donovan Sung announced a move to Google
In a public post dated July 19, 2019, Sung said he had spent five years at Xiaomi and that it was his last month there. He described helping the company expand internationally and said he was moving to the next phase of his career: joining Google in Singapore to work on payments initiatives, including Google Pay. His statement is the clearest direct evidence of either departure. Sung’s farewell post
His role at Xiaomi
Contemporary coverage described Sung as Xiaomi’s global spokesperson and a director of product management. He was a prominent public-facing figure associated with the company’s international expansion. In his farewell message, Sung said Xiaomi had a presence in more than 80 countries and more than 260 million Mi fans at the time. Those figures were his characterization of the company’s reach, not independently audited measures in the cited material. Gizmochina’s July 2019 report

What he said about leaving
Sung presented the move as a career transition. His post does not cite conflict, dissatisfaction, restructuring, or a Xiaomi crisis as a reason for leaving. Contemporary reporting said his Google work would involve payments initiatives in emerging markets; “Google Pay” is best understood as a description of that broader work, not a confirmed job title. DT Next’s July 20, 2019 report
Jai Mani’s departure was reported, not formally announced
Mani was described in contemporary reports as POCO’s product head or product manager. A former Google employee, he was one of the product executives associated with the POCO F1’s development and launch. Those descriptions support calling him a key POCO product executive; they do not establish that he was the sole head or founder of the entire POCO business.

Unlike Sung, Mani had not made a formal public announcement in the contemporary coverage. Reports said his social-media biography had changed to identify him as an ex-Product Manager of POCO and Xiaomi India. That profile change supports the reporting that he had left, but it is not equivalent to a direct resignation statement or a company announcement. DT Next’s account of the profile-based evidence
Did the departures mean POCO was being shut down?
Some reports treated Mani’s departure as a possible sign that Xiaomi might discontinue POCO. That was speculation, not a confirmed company plan. The departures did raise a reasonable question about how Xiaomi intended to organize the brand, but executive turnover alone could not establish the answer. The Times of India’s contemporary report on the shutdown speculation

In January 2020, Xiaomi announced that POCO would operate independently. TechCrunch described the move as a spin-off and noted that Mani and other POCO core members had left months earlier. This later announcement makes “POCO was simply being killed” an incomplete account of what followed. It does not, however, prove that the 2019 departures caused the spin-off. TechCrunch’s January 17, 2020 report
What “independent” established—and what it did not
Xiaomi’s announcement described POCO as operating independently, and coverage used terms such as “independent company,” “independent brand” and “spin-off.” The cited reporting did not explain the precise legal structure or establish that POCO had become a fully separate legal entity. The careful conclusion is that Xiaomi announced a more independent operating identity, while the exact corporate arrangement was not fully disclosed in that account.

What the exits do—and do not—show
The departures marked the loss of two recognizable figures associated with Xiaomi’s global profile and POCO’s product work. Their timing helps explain why observers questioned POCO’s future, especially after the F1 launch. But the evidence supports different levels of certainty: Sung directly announced his departure, while Mani’s was reported from a profile change. Neither account establishes a shared reason or proves that Xiaomi planned to abolish POCO.
Contemporary coverage also reported that Deepak Nakra, Xiaomi India’s offline-sales head, was leaving for Realme India. That is evidence of another executive move in the same period, not proof by itself of a company-wide crisis. DT Next’s report on the additional departure
