When the general price level rises, the same dollar amount buys less than before. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks consumer prices through the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) publishes the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index.
What “dollar value” means
In this context, dollar value does not mean a change to the currency’s printed denomination. It means the goods and services a dollar can buy at a particular time. BLS describes purchasing power as the change in the value to consumers of the goods and services a dollar will buy at different dates. When prices rise overall, purchasing power falls: a fixed amount of money buys less.
Inflation and purchasing-power change describe related but inverse movements. An inflation rate is a change in a price index over a stated period; it is not a claim that every person’s dollar or expenses changed by precisely the same percentage.
Who tracks consumer inflation in the United States?
Bureau of Labor Statistics: CPI
The BLS produces the Consumer Price Index. CPI-U, covering all urban consumers, is the measure most often reported as headline CPI. CPI-W, covering urban wage earners and clerical workers, is commonly used in wage escalation agreements. BLS also provides a free CPI Inflation Calculator.

Bureau of Economic Analysis: PCE
The BEA publishes the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index monthly in its Personal Income and Outlays report. BEA describes PCE as covering a wide range of consumer expenses and reflecting changes in consumer behavior. CPI and PCE are both consumer inflation measures, but they are distinct indexes with different scopes and methods; their rates should be identified by index and period rather than treated as interchangeable.
Other price measures answer different questions: the Producer Price Index tracks prices at earlier production stages; the International Price Program covers imports and exports; the Employment Cost Index concerns labor costs; and the GDP deflator covers prices across the broader economy. None is a direct substitute for a consumer-price measure when asking what a dollar buys as a consumer.

What the latest reported figures say
For the 12 months ending August 2026, the BLS reported that CPI-U all-items prices rose 3.4%. Its release was published September 11, 2026, and scheduled the September CPI release for October 14, 2026. The BEA PCE price-index page also showed a 3.4% change from one year earlier for August 2026; the page listed September 30, 2026, as its current release date.
These are separate index readings, each tied to August 2026 and a year-over-year comparison. They do not mean every household’s expenses rose by 3.4%. A household spending more on categories whose prices rose faster—or living in a place with different price changes—can experience a different personal inflation rate.

How to estimate what an earlier dollar amount equals now
To express an earlier amount in later-period dollars using CPI, multiply the original amount by the later-period CPI divided by the earlier-period CPI. To compare the purchasing power of one dollar across those periods, use the inverse ratio: earlier-period CPI divided by later-period CPI. BLS explains these calculations in its purchasing power factsheet.
For example, if the later CPI is 1.10 times the earlier CPI, an earlier amount of $100 corresponds to $110 in later dollars by this index method. Conversely, one dollar in the later period has the purchasing power of about 91 cents in the earlier period’s terms. The example illustrates the ratios; an actual conversion requires the relevant CPI values and dates.

Using the BLS calculator
- Open the BLS CPI Inflation Calculator.
- Enter the dollar amount and select the starting and ending years shown by the calculator.
- Read the result as a CPI-based estimate of the later amount equivalent to the earlier amount, not as a prediction of an individual bill or budget.
The calculator uses CPI-U for the U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted. BLS’s methodology page says its annual series has been calculated since 1913 and that the current year uses the latest monthly index. Depending on the dates entered, the comparison therefore may use annual data or, for the current year, the latest available monthly index.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your personal dollar value may differ
CPI summarizes average consumer price change; it is not tailored to one person’s location or shopping basket. Your personal experience can differ because your spending mix, location, and timing differ from the national average. A CPI conversion is useful for comparing broad purchasing power across dates, but it is not a personalized bill forecast.

CPI also is not a measure of asset prices such as stocks or bonds, and it does not capture a person’s overall financial well-being. Use it to understand changes in consumer prices, not to infer how every part of your finances has changed.
How to read an inflation number accurately
- Name the measure: CPI-U, CPI-W, or PCE.
- State the time window: for example, the 12 months ending August 2026, rather than simply saying “inflation was 3.4%.”
- Keep the interpretation at the index level: an average change is not a promise that each household’s costs rose by that amount.
- For a dollar conversion, specify the starting and ending dates and use the corresponding index values.
A historical illustration is not today’s rate
In a historical example comparing annual average purchasing power, BLS says the 2022 dollar retained about 92.6% of the purchasing power of the 2021 dollar—a decline of about 7.4%. That figure illustrates a comparison between those years; it is not a current inflation reading.
