DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man opened to an estimated $36 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters over the January 31–February 2, 2025 weekend, according to the Associated Press. Box Office Mojo later listed the opening at $36,001,940 from 3,885 theaters. The film had the biggest debut of 2025 at the time of AP’s February 2 report—not proof that the wider box office had broadly recovered.
How much did Dog Man make in its opening weekend?
The Associated Press reported a studio estimate of $36 million for the film’s U.S. and Canadian opening weekend, January 31–February 2, 2025. Box Office Mojo’s later listing gives the opening gross as $36,001,940 across 3,885 theaters. These are two versions of the same opening-weekend result: the AP figure is rounded and contemporaneous, while the database provides a later, more precise listing. AP called it the biggest debut of 2025 at that point. That description is tied to the opening weekend and the date of the report; it is not a claim about the full year’s eventual rankings.
What does the $36 million opening say about the film’s finances?
AP reported a $40 million production budget. That figure and the opening gross are not a profit calculation: box-office gross is not the amount received by the studio, and the comparison leaves out marketing, distribution arrangements, other costs and later revenue. The available figures therefore do not establish whether Dog Man was profitable or unprofitable.

The opening report also put the film’s international take at $4.2 million from 29 markets. That was an opening-period figure reported at the time, not a final worldwide total. AP said the movie earned an A CinemaScore, an audience rating reported in the same opening-period coverage.
Why did the headline say the box office was “back to life”?
The phrase captures a strong family-film launch during a quiet early-year period, rather than a measured recovery across the theatrical business. AP described Dog Man as 2025’s biggest debut so far and quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian saying, “The PG animation family film wave that was so prevalent in ’24 continues in ’25.”

For broader context, AP reported Comscore’s estimate that PG-rated films accounted for $2.9 billion, or 33% of U.S. ticket revenue, in 2024. That figure describes PG-rated films as a category; it is not revenue generated by Dog Man or a forecast for its box office.
What is the Dog Man movie based on?
The animated film adapts Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man graphic-novel series and was directed by Peter Hastings. In DreamWorks’ synopsis, a police dog and his human police officer owner are injured and fused together in surgery. Dog Man tries to impress his Chief and stop Petey the Cat from cloning himself; Petey’s resulting kitten, Li’l Petey, forms a bond with Dog Man. Universal currently lists digital, Blu-ray and DVD formats on its home-viewing page. Its February 17, 2025 release announcement said digital purchase or rental began February 18 and Blu-ray and DVD were scheduled for April 1, 2025. The announcement described bonus features including deleted and extended scenes, a making-of segment, drawing tutorials, recording-session material, feature commentary and a dog-doughnut feature. Those dates describe the original release plan; current availability and editions can vary by region and retailer.
