After buying a paper-format recreational fishing license online through Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife’s WILD account, you can print it at home on standard 8.5-by-11-inch copy paper. WDFW provides print links in your account, confirmation email, and checkout confirmation page. Recreational fishing licenses can be reprinted without limit; catch record cards are single-print items.
How to print a Washington fishing license
WDFW’s Print your license instructions apply to licenses purchased online through WILD. After purchase, use any of these routes:
- From your WILD account: Sign in, choose View and Print Active Privileges, then select Print Documents.
- From the confirmation email: Open the email receipt and use its print links.
- From the checkout page: Print from the order confirmation screen after completing the purchase.
WDFW’s current format is ordinary 8.5-by-11-inch copy paper; the department has discontinued waterproof, tear-resistant license paper. If printing does not start, WDFW recommends disabling pop-up blockers. If you do not have printer access, use an authorized Washington license dealer.
Choose paper or mobile before buying
For the 2026–27 license year, WDFW offers paper and mobile license formats. A paper license is a physical printout; mobile licenses are accessed through the MyWDFW or Fish Washington apps. WDFW says customers who select mobile in their WILD profile are committed to mobile for that license year and cannot switch back to paper until the next license year. See the department’s MyWDFW mobile app guidance and check current instructions before purchasing in case the process changes.

Choose the format that fits how you fish: paper gives you a physical document, while mobile is an option if you are comfortable displaying your license in the official apps. A paper printout is not mandatory for every angler. WDFW’s April 30, 2026 announcement reported that nearly 100,000 license customers had shifted to mobile that year; that is a dated, point-in-time figure, not a current total.
A fishing license and a catch record card are different
WDFW requires a fishing license for anglers age 16 and older. License types include freshwater, saltwater, and combination options; choose according to where you plan to fish and what you intend to harvest. Current license details are on WDFW’s Fishing and shellfishing licenses page.

A catch record card is a separate requirement for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, halibut, and Puget Sound Dungeness crab, subject to WDFW’s area-specific exception for coastal Dungeness crab. For eligible species and areas in 2026–27, an electronic catch record card is available in the MyWDFW and Fish Washington apps. Electronic reporting is optional; it does not remove the duty to record and report catch. WDFW says retained catch must be recorded immediately, before fishing continues. Paper cards must be returned by the applicable deadline even if no qualifying catch was kept. Check the current catch record card instructions for species, area, and deadline details.
Reprints, lost documents, and mailed licenses
Recreational fishing licenses are unlimited-reprint documents. Catch record cards are not: WDFW classifies them as single-print items. Handle the card carefully, and contact Licensing for replacement guidance if it is lost, damaged, or printed incorrectly. WDFW lists Licensing at 360-902-2464 and [email protected].

For online or phone purchases, WDFW says a mailed license can take 10–15 days to arrive. Customers with an email address in their WILD account may receive a temporary license for that period. Temporary catch record cards and tags are not available; if you need a card immediately, use an eligible electronic card or visit a license dealer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect paper documents while fishing
Because the license is printed on standard copy paper, consider keeping it in a sturdy zip-top bag, waterproof license holder, or small waterproof box. These are optional ways to protect the document, not WDFW requirements or substitutes for carrying it.
