It is not guaranteed at every register: the terminal must support NFC contactless payments, and it must accept the network used by the card in your Apple Wallet. Bring a backup card or cash in case the reader or payment does not work.
How to use Apple Pay at Trader Joe’s
Wait for the cashier to total your purchase and activate the card reader, then use the device you want to pay with.
On an iPhone with Face ID
- Double-click the side button.
- Authenticate with Face ID or your passcode.
- Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader until you see “Done” and a checkmark.
On an iPhone with Touch ID
- Double-click the Home button and authenticate with Touch ID or your passcode.
- Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader until the payment confirmation appears.
On an Apple Watch
- Double-click the side button. Scroll to another card if you do not want to use the default.
- Hold the watch display near the contactless reader and wait for a vibration, sound, or on-screen confirmation.

Which cards work with Apple Pay?
Apple Pay uses a supported credit, debit, prepaid, or other payment card saved in Wallet; it is not a separate payment account that makes every Wallet card acceptable everywhere. Two things must be true: your issuer and card must support Apple Pay, and the store’s payment system must accept that card’s network. Apple explains this limitation in its guide to where Apple Pay can be used.

If you want a particular card’s rewards, select that card before paying. Rewards and any account-specific terms come from the card issuer, not from Apple Pay or Trader Joe’s.
What to do if Apple Pay does not work
The reader does not respond
- Ask the cashier to activate or restart the reader; the payment prompt may not be ready yet.
- Hold the top of the iPhone or the Apple Watch display directly near the reader’s contactless area, then authenticate and try again.
- If the register still does not respond, ask whether another register supports contactless payment or use your backup method. A contactless symbol is not a guarantee that contactless payment is currently enabled.
The card is declined
A decline may come from the card issuer, a card or network incompatibility, a locked or restricted card, or a temporary store or terminal problem. Try another card in Wallet, check the issuer’s app, or use the physical card associated with the Wallet card. If the terminal asks for a PIN, follow its instructions; PIN requirements can vary by card and transaction.

Your device is nearly dead or needs verification
Do not count on Apple Pay as your only way to pay if your device is nearly out of battery, the card has not finished being set up, or the issuer requires additional verification. Apple Pay does not require opening a website or Trader Joe’s app at checkout, but that does not guarantee that every transaction will go through in every device, issuer, or terminal condition.
Does Apple Pay work with EBT, SNAP, or Apple Cash?
Ordinary credit- and debit-card acceptance does not establish that a store can process EBT or SNAP through Apple Pay. If you plan to use benefits, confirm compatibility with the store and your state benefits provider before shopping.

Apple Cash is different from person-to-person transfers: Apple describes it as a digital card that can be used through Apple Pay where accepted. Its availability at checkout still depends on the Wallet card and the retailer’s payment setup; do not assume that a transfer or Tap to Cash function is accepted at the register.
Is there an extra fee?
Apple says it does not charge consumers an additional fee for using Apple Pay. Your bank or card issuer may still apply fees or other terms associated with the card. See Apple’s Apple Pay information.

Why carry a backup payment method?
Apple’s guidance says Apple Pay depends on a contactless-enabled terminal and an accepted card network. It also notes that a displayed contactless symbol does not always mean the feature is currently enabled. Because acceptance can vary by register and payment circumstances, carrying a physical card or cash is the practical fallback.
To check a nearby store, use Trader Joe’s official store locator and ask the location about its current contactless-payment availability.
