Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn Etsy 429 error means the service is temporarily limiting requests. The remedy depends on where you see it: Etsy.com or the Etsy/Seller app usually points to a browser, network, ISP, or service-access problem; a response from Etsy’s Open API means your application exceeded a request quota. Stop rapid retries, identify which case you have, and follow the matching steps below.
First, identify which Etsy 429 you have
On Etsy.com, the message may read “429 error: too many requests.” Etsy says an unfamiliar internet service provider (ISP), or a provider blocking access to Etsy, can cause this consumer-facing error. It does not automatically mean your account is suspended or permanently restricted. See Etsy’s troubleshooting guidance at Etsy Help.
If the status comes from an application calling Etsy’s Open API, it has a different meaning: the application exceeded a per-second or rolling daily limit. That branch is covered separately below.
Quick, low-risk checks for Etsy users
- Stop refreshing. Repeated page loads create more requests and can prolong a temporary limit.
- Try a private or incognito window. This separates the test from your normal cookies and most saved session data.
- Use another current browser. Etsy lists Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Safari as modern browser options.
- Test another connection. Open Etsy on cellular data instead of home Wi-Fi, or use a different trusted Wi-Fi network.
- Restart the modem or router. Etsy specifically recommends restarting the modem for a persistent 429.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy. This is a diagnostic step, not an Etsy guarantee. A VPN changes your apparent source IP and can add another shared or unfamiliar address.
- Check Etsy’s service status. Visit Etsystatus.com before making extensive local changes.
- Update the app if the error appears in Etsy or Etsy Seller.
The browser switch, modem restart, and ISP contact are Etsy’s stated 429 remedies. Private-window tests, network comparisons, extension isolation, and temporarily disabling a VPN are practical diagnostics that help locate the cause but are not promised universal fixes.

Use the network test to narrow the cause
| Test | What happens | Likely interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Home Wi-Fi fails; cellular data works | Etsy opens on the phone’s mobile connection | The home ISP, router, public IP, DNS, VPN, or filtering may be involved. This strongly suggests, but does not prove, a network-specific problem. |
| Every browser fails on one network | Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari show the same result | Less likely to be one browser profile; investigate the network or an Etsy-side issue. |
| Another browser works | The original browser has access | A cookie, cache, extension, add-on, or profile conflict is likely. |
| Several devices and networks fail | Desktop, phone, Wi-Fi, and cellular all have trouble | A broader Etsy, regional, or account/action-specific problem becomes more plausible. |
| Website works but Seller app fails | Browser access is normal | Focus on the app version, installation, or an app-specific service problem. |
| Website works but an API call returns 429 | Normal browsing is unaffected | The application has hit an API quota; browser cleanup will not fix it. |
Browser troubleshooting
Isolate extensions and add-ons
If Etsy works in a private window, open the normal profile and disable extensions one at a time. Traffic-filtering, automation, privacy, and ad-blocking tools can alter requests or repeatedly reload pages. Re-enable each extension individually to identify a conflict. Do not run an automation or reload loop while testing.
Clear only Etsy site data when possible
Etsy’s general technical guidance recommends clearing Etsy-related cookies and cache. Use your browser’s site-data controls to remove data for Etsy rather than immediately wiping every site. Before doing so, confirm that you know your Etsy password and can complete any two-factor authentication; clearing cookies can remove saved sessions and other browser data. A cookie reset may help a browser-profile problem, but it cannot repair an ISP block, an Etsy outage, or an API quota.
Retry once after each meaningful change
After switching browsers, isolating an extension, or clearing Etsy data, make one controlled test. If it still fails, move to a different network or the status checks instead of repeatedly reloading.
Modem, router, VPN, and ISP checks
Restart the modem once
Power-cycle the modem according to your ISP’s normal procedure, wait for the connection to return, and test Etsy. If the error returns, do not keep rebooting repeatedly. A temporary change after a restart may indicate that the public IP, ISP path, or router state was involved, but it does not establish that Etsy permanently blocked your IP.

Test without a VPN or proxy
If a VPN or proxy is active, turn it off briefly and test the ordinary connection. If the error disappears, the VPN address or routing path may have contributed. Etsy’s published help does not state that all VPNs are blocked, so treat this as troubleshooting rather than a universal policy.
Ask the ISP specific questions
Etsy recommends contacting the ISP when a 429 persists. Ask whether:
- Etsy.com is blocked or filtered on the connection.
- The service uses a shared or frequently changing public IP.
- DNS security, parental controls, malware filtering, or workplace-management policies affect Etsy.
- The ISP can investigate failed connections to Etsy from your line.
Do not spoof an IP address or disable important security controls simply to bypass the error. A workplace, school, library, or managed household network may impose its own filtering or traffic limits; test a personal connection before changing managed settings.
If Etsy or Etsy Seller shows 429 in the app
- Install the latest Etsy or Etsy Seller version through your device’s official app store. Etsy says updates may contain a fix.
- Force-close the app, reopen it, and restart the phone.
- Open Etsy in a browser. If the browser works while the app fails, the problem is more likely app-specific.
- Compare Wi-Fi with cellular data. If only Wi-Fi fails, investigate the network before reinstalling.
- Reinstall only after confirming your password and access to any required two-factor authentication method.
Reinstalling cannot resolve an Etsy-wide incident or an ISP-level block, so do not repeat the process as a substitute for network and status checks.

- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
Check for an Etsy incident
Etsy directs users to Etsystatus.com for suspected site-wide outages and to its Technical Issues forum through its technical-issue guidance. Check the status before extensive local changes. Record the date, time and time zone, country or region, device, browser or app, and the affected function (listing pages, sign-in, checkout, Shop Manager, or another feature).
If the status page reports an incident, wait for Etsy’s update rather than hammering refresh. A green status page does not rule out a regional, ISP, account-specific, or feature-specific failure; widespread reports in the forum are evidence of a possible unlisted issue, not proof of an outage.

Understand QPS, QPD, and the rolling window
Etsy’s rate-limit documentation describes two limits:
- QPS (queries per second): controls short bursts.
- QPD (queries per day): uses a rolling 24-hour sliding window, not a reset at midnight.
Exceeding either limit returns HTTP 429 and a retry-after response header with an estimated wait. Example values in the documentation are illustrative; check your application’s current limits in the Developer Portal rather than treating them as universal.

Recover without making the limit worse
- Read and log the
retry-aftervalue. - Stop immediate retries and wait at least that interval.
- Retry with exponential backoff, random jitter, and a maximum attempt count.
- Reduce worker concurrency and burst size.
- Cache responses that do not need to be fetched repeatedly.
- Avoid polling unchanged listings, orders, or inventory.
- Track both QPS and consumption over the rolling daily window.
- Request a higher quota if the use case genuinely requires it.

time.sleep(wait_seconds + random.uniform(0, 0.5))
delay = min(delay * 2, 60)
raise RuntimeError("Etsy API rate limit persisted after retries")
This illustrative code is not Etsy-provided. A production client also needs request timeouts, logging, cancellation, idempotency decisions, and a hard retry cap. Multiple workers should coordinate retries so they do not all send the same request together.
Requesting a higher API quota
Etsy says to contact [email protected] with an application description and estimated QPD and QPS requirements. Higher limits are discretionary and may carry additional terms or charges under Etsy’s API terms. Creating extra API keys to evade a limit is not a legitimate workaround and is prohibited by those terms.
Do not confuse authentication failures with 429
Current request and authentication documentation requires every v3 request to include an x-api-key header containing the keystring and shared secret; OAuth is additionally required for private or write operations. Etsy’s February 2, 2026 developer announcement says requests missing the shared secret would be rejected after February 9, 2026 (announcement). That is an authentication problem, not a fix for a 429. Change credentials only when the response indicates authentication failure.
When to contact Etsy Support
Contact Etsy if the error persists across browsers and networks, blocks essential account or order functions, continues after the modem and app/browser checks, affects only a particular account or action, or appears alongside security, identity, payment, or suspension messages. Include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The exact error text and a screenshot with private information redacted.
- Approximate timestamp and time zone.
- The Etsy URL or feature affected.
- Browser or app name and version, device, and operating system.
- Whether a VPN, proxy, extension, workplace, school, or library filter was active.
- Whether the failure occurred on Wi-Fi, cellular data, or both.
- Every step already attempted and the result.
Do not create duplicate accounts or repeatedly log in as a workaround. If only the home connection fails, provide the same details to your ISP and ask it to investigate Etsy access and filtering.
The Bottom Line
For Etsy.com or the mobile apps, stop refreshing, test a private window and a different network, restart the modem, update the app, and check Etsy’s status page. For an Open API 429, honor retry-after, back off, reduce and cache requests, and monitor the rolling quota. The two problems look similar but require different fixes.
