Kia reports up to 53 MPG combined for several 2026 Niro Hybrid trims, but that rating alone cannot establish five-year dollar savings or a class-leading result. The answer depends on which vehicles you compare, how far you drive, fuel prices, and the baseline used.
What the 2026 Kia Niro Hybrid’s fuel-economy ratings show
Kia lists 2026 Niro Hybrid LX, EX, and SX trims at 53 MPG city, 54 MPG highway, and 53 MPG combined. The SX Touring is listed at 53 city, 45 highway, and 49 combined. These are manufacturer-reported EPA estimates; an individual driver’s mileage can differ. See Kia’s 2026 Niro model page.
For a quick efficiency comparison, use combined MPG rather than focusing on the best city or highway figure. The EPA describes combined city/highway MPG as the prominent comparison figure on its fuel-economy label. But MPG is a measure of fuel consumption, not a dollar-savings ranking by itself.
What a five-year fuel-savings figure actually compares
An EPA label’s five-year “You Save” estimate compares a vehicle with the average new vehicle using assumptions printed on that label. The EPA explains: “This is an estimate of how much more (or less) this vehicle will cost to fuel over five years relative to the average new vehicle, based on the assumptions listed in the print at the bottom of the label.” Read the EPA’s gasoline vehicle label explanation for the definition and assumptions.

That label estimate is not a promise of what a particular household will save, nor proof that a vehicle beats every hybrid SUV. A fair five-year dollar comparison needs a defined rival or baseline, the same ownership period and annual mileage, and a consistent fuel-price assumption. Fuel spending also is not the same as total ownership cost, which includes expenses beyond gasoline.
Does the Niro beat the Prius on fuel economy?
A published comparison of 2023 models shows why the model year and configuration matter. Edmunds, in a comparison republished by the Associated Press, reported a maximum EPA combined estimate of 57 MPG for the 2023 Toyota Prius FWD base model, compared with 53 MPG for the 2023 Kia Niro base model. On that comparison’s test route, the Prius returned 52.3 MPG and the Niro 47.7 MPG. These figures apply to the specific 2023 configurations and test route, not to every model year or trim. A separate 2024 Edmunds roundup republished by AP called the Niro the most efficient among the vehicles featured in that article, at up to 53 MPG combined. That is a result within the roundup’s selected group, not a current ranking of all hybrid SUVs. The article is available as The five best hybrid SUVs under $35,000.

The available figures support a narrower conclusion: some 2026 Niro Hybrid trims carry a 53 MPG combined estimate, while the SX Touring is rated at 49 MPG combined. They do not establish which current hybrid SUV has the lowest five-year fuel bill or the greatest dollar savings under identical assumptions. The EPA provides fuel-economy and automotive-trends resources, including Explore the Automotive Trends Data, but a useful savings ranking still needs a clearly defined set of comparable vehicles and consistent inputs.

Kia’s 2021 press release claimed $3,250 in five-year fuel-cost savings for the 2021 Niro Hybrid LX compared with the average new vehicle. How to compare fuel costs for your own driving
- Choose comparable vehicles. Match the model year, market, vehicle class, and relevant trims before comparing ratings.
- Use one efficiency measure. Compare EPA combined MPG for each vehicle rather than mixing city, highway, and combined figures.
- Set the same assumptions. Use the same annual miles, fuel price, and five-year ownership period for every vehicle.
- Name the baseline. State whether you are comparing the Niro with a particular rival, the average new vehicle, or another defined alternative.
- Keep the claim narrow. A calculated fuel-cost difference addresses fuel spending under those assumptions; it does not by itself show total ownership savings.
