Does PURA D’OR Original Gold Label Shampoo Help Hair Growth? What the Evidence Shows

PURA D’OR’s reported eight-week results came from a shampoo-and-conditioner regimen and participant self-assessments—not proof that the shampoo alone regrows hair.

Short answer: PURA D’OR Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo is a rinse-off cosmetic marketed for hair strength, breakage, and fuller-looking hair. The available eight-week study reports participants’ impressions of a shampoo-and-conditioner regimen; it does not show that the shampoo alone regrows hair.

What is PURA D’OR Original Gold Label shampoo?

It is a 16 fl oz liquid shampoo sold as PURA D’OR Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo. The brand describes it as an anti-thinning product and lists ingredients including aloe vera leaf juice, cleansing agents, biotin, nettle extract, black cumin seed oil, pumpkin seed oil, green tea extract, and rosemary oil. Those ingredients do not, by themselves, establish that the product causes hair growth. PURA D’OR’s product page gives directions to apply it to wet hair, massage the scalp, leave it for two minutes, and rinse. Target’s listing describes the 16 fl oz product and carries the claim “Clinically proven to reduce hair thinning in 8 weeks”; that wording is a listing/manufacturer claim, not an independent conclusion. What did the eight-week study find?

PURA D’OR’s clinical-data page links a report titled “An Eight-Week Clinical Study Evaluating the Efficacy of a Conditioner and Shampoo (Gold).” Media Lab Science’s report, dated January 20, 2022, identifies Vital’s International Group as sponsor and Media Lab Science as the study center, with Nathalia Pereira de Souza, Ph.D., as principal investigator. The study ran from October 26 through December 20, 2021. PURA D’OR clinical studies page · Study report

How the regimen was used

The report says 36 subjects were included and 33 completed the study. Its summary describes female participants aged 22–66 who self-reported thinning and other hair concerns. Participants used both Gold shampoo and Gold conditioner at least three times weekly for eight weeks. The stated objective was to assess the products under normal-use conditions using subjective questionnaires and digital photography.

What the percentages mean

At week eight, 87.9% of participants agreed that “The regimen reduces hair thinning.” The report also says 93.9% agreed that the regimen improved hair shine. These are questionnaire responses among study completers about the combined shampoo-and-conditioner regimen. They are not shampoo-only results, a measured hair-regrowth rate, or proof of new follicle growth. Although the methods mention photographs, the cited percentages are self-assessments; the report summary does not describe a control comparison.

Product callout: If you are considering the product studied, look for PURA D’OR Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo—but keep in mind that the reported eight-week results were for shampoo used with the matching conditioner, not shampoo on its own.

Does the shampoo treat hair loss or regrow hair?

The evidence described above supports a limited conclusion: some participants reported less thinning and improved shine while using a shampoo-and-conditioner regimen. It does not establish that the shampoo independently regrows hair or treats a medical cause of hair loss.

The FDA classifies shampoos intended to cleanse hair as cosmetics, and explains that claims made in labeling or advertising can establish a product’s intended use. It gives restoring hair growth as an example of a claim that can make a product a drug. Cosmetics and their ingredients, except color additives, generally do not require FDA premarket approval; drugs generally need FDA approval or must conform to an applicable OTC monograph. Do not interpret the brand’s claims or the study as FDA approval of this shampoo for hair regrowth. FDA: Cosmetics and U.S. law

How is it different from minoxidil?

A separate product listed in DailyMed is a men’s topical solution labeled with minoxidil 5% w/v for hair regrowth on the top of the scalp. Its label says it is for men only and gives its own directions and cautions. It is not PURA D’OR Gold Label shampoo, and its ingredient, evidence, use instructions, and restrictions do not transfer to the shampoo. The DailyMed label was revised in January 2023; check the current label before using that product. DailyMed label

What should you do if the shampoo irritates your scalp or hair?

The FDA says it has received adverse-event submissions involving certain hair-cleansing products, including reports of hair loss, breakage, balding, itching, and rash. It also states that further investigation is needed to draw a firm connection between certain hair products or ingredients and alopecia. That general page does not identify PURA D’OR Gold Label shampoo as one of the products discussed. FDA advises stopping use and contacting a healthcare provider if a hair cleanser appears to cause hair loss, balding, itching, or rash. FDA: Hair cleansing products

How to judge the claim before buying

  • Match the product to your goal: the evidence here concerns reported thinning and appearance during a cleansing regimen, not treatment of a diagnosed cause of hair loss.
  • Check what was actually tested: shampoo and conditioner were used together, so the findings cannot isolate the shampoo’s effect.
  • Read the outcome carefully: the headline thinning figure reflects participant agreement with a questionnaire statement, not objectively counted new hairs.
  • Separate cosmetic claims from treatment evidence: claims about reduced breakage or fuller-looking hair are not the same as evidence of biological regrowth.
