Do Microsoft Rewards points expire?
Yes. Microsoft’s Rewards support pages describe a 12-month inactivity rule, but differ on what activity resets the clock. The earning guidance says points expire if you have no earning activity within 12 months. The redemption guidance says they expire if you do not earn or redeem anything in 12 months.

To be safe, earn or redeem points at least once within each 12-month period, and check the current rule and your points on your Microsoft Rewards dashboard. Microsoft does not state a publication date on these support pages, so consult the live dashboard for the terms applying to your account.
What happens to money redeemed from points?
Rewards points are not cash. Microsoft says, “Microsoft Rewards points don’t have any cash value.” When you redeem points for a Microsoft or Xbox gift card, the value is deposited directly into your Microsoft account as promotional balance, according to Microsoft’s Rewards explanation.

Promotional balance can expire according to the terms of the promotion. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish one universal expiration period for balance funded by Rewards points. Check the Microsoft account for the balance and any applicable promotional expiration date; do not assume the funds are permanent.
Does other Microsoft account balance expire?
Microsoft’s gift card terms say, “Non-promotional account balance doesn’t expire.” That rule applies to non-promotional balance, not automatically to funds deposited from a Rewards redemption. Whether account money expires depends on its classification and, for promotional balance, the offer’s terms.

How to check your points, balance, or redemption
- Check points: Sign in to your Microsoft account and open the Rewards dashboard to view your points and available rewards.
- Check deposited balance: Review your Microsoft account balance and look for any promotional expiration date or terms attached to it.
- Check a missing reward: From the Rewards page, review Order history. If the order or code is still missing, use the Rewards Support route in Microsoft’s order-tracking guidance.
Rewards options and availability vary by account and market, so an option shown for one person or region may not appear for another.

No guaranteed cash conversion follows from the points balance. Microsoft gives a general example of 5,000 points for something worth approximately $5, but says points have no cash value and limits and terms vary by region. Treat that as an example, not a guaranteed exchange rate or cash valuation.
