No. Manchester United does not owe Adidas a £10 million penalty fee. The club’s 2025 filing says Adidas will pay Manchester United £10 million less under its minimum guarantee for the 2025/26 season because the men’s first team will not play in the UEFA Champions League. Losing the Europa League final closed one route to qualification; the contract deduction is triggered by missing the Champions League, not by losing the final.
What the Adidas clause actually does
The contract reduces the minimum guarantee Adidas pays Manchester United by £10 million for each season without men’s first-team participation in the Champions League. The clause applies from 2025/26 through 2034/35. In its 2025 Form 20-F, Manchester United said the first team had not qualified for the 2025/26 competition and that this resulted in a £10 million deduction to the contract price. That is a reduction in sponsorship revenue, not a bill sent to the club by Adidas. Calling it a “penalty fee” Manchester United must pay reverses the direction of the payment.
Why the Europa League final matters—but is not the trigger
Manchester United says Champions League participation is typically secured through a top-four Premier League finish or by winning the Europa League. The final defeat therefore mattered because it ended one possible qualification route. The contractual condition, however, is whether the team participates in the Champions League in a given season. The club’s filing says its 2024/25 performance meant it would play in no European competitions in 2025/26.

How large is the agreement, and what else can change payments?
The July 2023 extension added ten years to the Adidas agreement. The full contract began in August 2015 and runs through June 2035. Manchester United’s filing lists a £750 million minimum guarantee for the original term and £900 million for the extension: £1.65 billion in total before contractual adjustments. That headline total is not an unconditional fixed payment, as the Champions League deduction and other terms can affect the amount.
- Performance increases: Results in league, domestic-cup and continental competitions can increase annual payments, by up to a stated maximum of £4.4 million per year.
- Premier League status: Adidas may reduce applicable payments by 50% if the men’s team is not in the Premier League. The contract also provides a termination right after one full season’s notice in specified relegation circumstances.
- Apparel operations: The club says Adidas redesigns match jerseys and training-wear collections each season. Branded apparel and licensed merchandise are part of Manchester United’s retail and merchandising business.
These provisions are separate from the £10 million deduction for a season without Champions League participation.

Why the £10m deduction is not the same as a £10m accounting hit in one year
Manchester United says contract revenue—including estimated Champions League deductions over the life of the agreement—is recognized evenly over the contract term. Its filing states that a one-year change in the estimated deduction changes revenue recognized in a single financial year by £0.8 million. That accounting sensitivity is not the full £10 million contractual deduction, nor does it mean the club pays £10 million in cash during that reporting year.

Missing European competition can also affect UEFA distributions, matchday receipts and broadcast income, but those are different revenue streams from the Adidas guarantee. Manchester United says European broadcast and matchday revenue varies by season. The filing does not make those amounts interchangeable with the sponsorship deduction, so the £10 million figure should not be treated as a total estimate of the financial effect of missing Europe.
