In 2021, Elon Musk said his primary home was a roughly $50,000 house in Boca Chica, Texas, that he rented from SpaceX. That statement does not establish a current price, a home tour, or that he lived there with his children. Later reporting also distinguishes the SpaceX rental from a separate Boxabl prefab Musk bought as a nearby guest house.
What did Musk say about the Boca Chica house?
On June 9, 2021, Musk posted: “My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX.” He added, “It’s kinda awesome though.” Euronews reproduced the post in its August 2021 report. The roughly $50,000 figure was Musk’s description at that time—not a verified current value, sale price, rent, or asking price. Euronews, August 12, 2021.
Is the house a Boxabl Casita?
The available accounts do not establish that the house Musk described as a SpaceX rental was a Boxabl Casita. Euronews reported that Boxabl had installed a prefab home in Boca Chica in November 2020 for an unnamed “top secret customer,” and said Musk was believed to be connected. That was suggestive reporting, not confirmation that the installation and his rental were the same dwelling.
Fortune’s June 12, 2026 report draws a distinction: Musk rents a Boca Chica house from SpaceX and separately bought a Boxabl prefab that he uses as a nearby guest house. The report therefore does not support treating the two homes as one. Fortune also quoted Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, recalling a visit; her remarks are her account as reported by Fortune, not an independently verified house tour. Fortune, June 12, 2026.

What is a Boxabl Casita?
Boxabl’s 2023 SEC-filed offering material describes its Casita as a “19′ x 19′ pre-fab studio apartment” that unfolds from shipping-container size. The company says it is factory-finished with a kitchen, bathroom, electrical components, and HVAC. These are Boxabl’s product descriptions in an offering document, not independent confirmation of performance or a current retail listing. Boxabl offering material filed with the SEC, 2023.
That filing does not establish a current purchase price, delivery charge, permitting requirements, site preparation, utility-connection costs, availability, or warranty terms. The often-repeated euro figure is a conversion of the historical $50,000 statement, not a current euro-denominated offer. It is not enough information to estimate the full cost of buying and installing a comparable home.

Does Musk live there with 12 children?
The reviewed sources do not support the claim that Musk lives in the Boca Chica house with 12 children. Architectural Digest España reported in February 2025 that he had 13 children and described publicly reported family groups, but did not say they lived in that house. A reported child count is not evidence of a shared household or custody arrangement, and that 2025 count should not be presented as a verified 2026 total. | Dwelling | What is reported | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Boca Chica/Starbase house | Musk said in 2021 that it was his primary home, approximately $50,000, and rented from SpaceX. | A historical statement by Musk, reproduced by Euronews; it does not establish current price or unchanged residence. |
| Nearby Boxabl prefab | Fortune reported in 2026 that Musk bought it and uses it as a guest house. | A separate dwelling in Fortune’s account; it is not established as the SpaceX rental Musk described in 2021. |
Neither account verifies that the house was opened for a tour or that Musk shared it with 12 children. The more accurate takeaway is that he publicly described a modest SpaceX-rented home in 2021, while later reporting identified a separate nearby Boxabl guest house.
