Birmingham City’s proposed stadium is a separate element of the wider Sports Quarter regeneration project.
What the £400 million figure covers
The council report links the expected funding to transport infrastructure: a Metro extension and work to redevelop Adderley Park Station. It does not identify the money as a stadium-only grant. The wording is “expected to be around £400 million,” so it should not be treated as confirmed stadium funding. Birmingham City Council’s committee report
Other announced figures refer to different parts or scales of the development. They are not interchangeable:
| Figure | What it refers to | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Around £400 million | Expected government funding for the Metro extension and Adderley Park Station redevelopment | Birmingham City Council, 2026; expected funding, not a stated stadium grant. Council committee report |
| £100 million | Knighthead’s investment in the wider East Birmingham regeneration project | UK Government announcement, 5 February 2025; not identified as the final stadium budget. Government announcement |
| £3 billion | The wider Sports Quarter project | Birmingham City FC’s 2024/25 annual review; not a stadium-only construction cost. Club annual review |
| Stadium-only construction cost | Not stated in the reviewed official sources | No stadium-only budget is established. |
What Birmingham City is proposing
The project owner describes a proposed 62,000-capacity Powerhouse Stadium in Bordesley Green, East Birmingham. Its concept designs were developed by Heatherwick Studio and MANICA Architecture, with writer and filmmaker Steven Knight. The venue is presented as a proposed new home for Birmingham City FC and a multifunctional sports and entertainment venue; these are project plans, not confirmation that it has been built or approved. Capacity figures have changed between official descriptions. The Sports Quarter’s current concept page gives 62,000, while the UK Government’s announcement on 5 February 2025 described a 60,000-seat stadium. These are figures from different sources and dates, not evidence of two separate stadiums. Sports Quarter · UK Government
The stadium is one part of a broader regeneration plan
The Sports Quarter vision extends beyond the stadium. Project materials describe sporting facilities and a campus, community pitches, leisure and entertainment venues, green spaces, walking and cycling routes, shops, offices, homes and improved transport links. The stadium page also presents food markets, restaurants, cafés, social spaces and children’s play areas as intended features. These are elements of a vision, not a guarantee that every facility will be delivered. Sports Quarter vision · Stadium page
