That does not rule out a limited promotion, but there is no documented universal student discount code or fixed percentage to count on. Check the live fare and conditions for your route before booking.
What discounts and fares does American publish?
American’s Reservations and tickets FAQs identify government or military fares in some markets, but do not list student fares. The airline describes its flight discount separately: it can be used for eligible travel originating in the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands on American, American Eagle, qualifying oneworld partner flights, and codeshares with an American flight number. It is not identified as a student benefit. Contact Reservations for details about government or military fares if you may qualify.
The same FAQ says American does not offer emergency or bereavement fares. Neither those fares nor the government and military categories should be treated as student discounts.
Can a student booking site find a lower fare?
It may be worth comparing an independent student booking service, but its availability does not establish that American participates in a student fare program. Skyscanner’s February 17, 2026 guide describes BYOjet for Students, formerly StudentUniverse, as requiring age submission and full-time student verification for eligible fares. That description does not confirm that a particular American-operated itinerary is discounted.

Compare the same route and dates on aa.com and the booking service, then assess the complete booking terms—not just the displayed ticket price.
How to compare the real cost of an itinerary
- Search the same trip. Use matching dates, airports, passenger details, and cabin on aa.com and any student booking site.
- Check who operates and sells the flight. Confirm the operating airline, flight number, and ticketing agency. A third-party listing alone does not establish an American student fare.
- Read the fare conditions. Compare changes, cancellations, baggage, and any student eligibility or verification requirements stated by the booking service.
- Calculate the checkout total. Include relevant bag and seat charges before deciding which option costs less. Verify the terms again before paying because fares, inventory, and baggage rules can change.
Pay particular attention to Basic Economy
American says it will continue to offer Basic Economy fares in Main Cabin for customers seeking the lowest price. Basic Economy has its own restrictions, so review the current terms for the specific itinerary and include any bag or seat charges that apply. A lower starting fare is not necessarily the lower total cost.

Baggage fees depend on the ticket and trip
American’s May 25, 2026 announcement, “American Airlines updates bag fees and Basic Economy fares,” gives examples for eligible domestic U.S. and Canada travel, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For tickets purchased April 9, 2026 or later, it lists a first checked bag at $45 prepaid or $50 at the airport, and a second at $55 prepaid or $60 at the airport. For domestic Basic Economy tickets purchased May 18, 2026 or later, it lists the first checked bag at $50 prepaid or $55 at the airport.
These are dated examples, not universal fees: the announcement distinguishes fare type, region, and ticket purchase date. Check the current baggage charge for your exact itinerary rather than assuming these figures apply.
