No—not necessarily. Four 10-hour days make a 40-hour week compressed into four longer shifts. A reduced-hours four-day week means working fewer hours overall. Before agreeing to a schedule, check both the weekly hours and how pay will change: the label “four-day week” can describe different arrangements.
What counts as a four-day workweek?
There is no single legal or employment definition established by the sources here. The 4 Day Week Foundation describes its campaign model as working 32 hours or fewer over four days without a reduction in pay. For the UK trial, researchers defined the change as a meaningful reduction in working time, typically achieved by taking a day off.

Professor Brendan Burchell, the University of Cambridge professor who led qualitative research for that UK trial, explained: “A four-day working week is short-hand for a ‘20% reduction in working time’. Typically, this can be simply one day off a week, say Friday or Monday. It does not, however, include working longer days without a reduction in hours.” UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) reports that four 10-hour days would not have qualified for the trial, while five shorter days could qualify if weekly working time was meaningfully reduced.
Compressed hours: four 10-hour days
A 4×10 schedule has four 10-hour shifts, or 40 hours in total. It gives you an additional day away from work compared with a five-day, 40-hour schedule, but it does not reduce your weekly hours. The daily shifts are longer, and whether pay changes depends on the employer’s terms.

Reduced hours: fewer than 40 hours over four days
In a reduced-hours arrangement, total weekly working time falls. The Foundation’s campaign definition sets a specific model—32 hours or fewer over four days, with no pay cut—but employers may use the term differently. Confirm whether the offer actually reduces hours, protects pay, or does both. The Foundation’s four-day-week FAQs explain its terminology and suggested approaches; it is an advocacy organization, not a regulator setting a universal standard.

The UK trial’s definition and the Foundation’s campaign model are attributed definitions, not universal standards. Do not assume results from a reduced-hours trial apply to a 4×10 schedule: they are different arrangements.

UKRI’s 2023 account describes a six-month trial involving 61 companies and around 2,900 employees. It reports that 56 of the 61 companies (92%) continued after the trial and 18 made the change permanent. At the end of the trial, 39% of employees reported being less stressed and 71% reported reduced burnout; staff leaving participating companies fell by 57% over the trial period. These are results reported for that particular UK trial, not promises of identical outcomes elsewhere. UKRI also noted in 2023 that more careful academic study of the data was still needed.

4 Day Week Global’s longer-term pilot report
4 Day Week Global’s long-term pilot report, accessed 4 October 2026, presents results from participating organizations in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland. It reports a 69% reduction in employee burnout, a 57% increase in reported work ability, a 32% decrease in attrition, a 15% increase in revenue over the trial, and that 95% of employees wanted to continue. The report compares baseline results with results at 12 months; those figures describe its pilot participants and should not be generalized to every workplace.
What should you check before agreeing to a schedule?
For employees, the schedule’s label matters less than the written terms. Ask for the before-and-after hours and pay, and check the contract and applicable workplace rules.

- Pay: What will your pay be before and after the change? No pay cut is part of the Foundation’s campaign model, but your employer’s terms control your arrangement.
- Time off: Which day is off? Is it fixed, rotating or different by team?
- Other terms: How do holidays, contract terms and local rules apply? The sources cited here do not establish jurisdiction-specific legal answers, so check the rules that apply where you work.
What should an employer plan?
A workable schedule needs to fit the work, not just the calendar. The Foundation describes Friday, Monday, Wednesday and staggered team days off as possible patterns; where customer or service coverage matters, different teams can take different days.
- Define the offer: State weekly hours, shift lengths, pay treatment and days off in plain terms.
- Plan coverage: Decide how customers and essential services will be supported when some teams are off.
- Consult staff: Gather employees’ input on workload, shift length and practical constraints before setting a pattern.
- Set a baseline: Choose a business-specific productivity measure before the change, then compare it with results during the new schedule.
That baseline helps distinguish a genuine improvement from work simply being compressed, delayed or shifted onto colleagues. Neither the UK trial nor 4 Day Week Global’s report establishes that every employer will see the same health, retention or revenue results.
