Not necessarily. Whether you need a second job to pay for cannabis depends on your own take-home income, essential bills, debt payments, savings goals and other discretionary spending. Canadian survey averages can provide context, but they cannot determine what is affordable for you.
How to tell whether cannabis spending fits your budget
Start with your monthly take-home income—the amount you actually receive after deductions. Subtract essential bills, minimum debt payments and the savings contributions you plan to make. What remains is available for discretionary spending, including cannabis.
- Write down monthly take-home income. Use the amount deposited into your account, not gross salary.
- List essential expenses. Include housing and utilities, food, transportation and insurance.
- Include debt and savings. Count minimum debt payments and any savings goals you intend to meet.
- Add cannabis and other discretionary spending. Use what you actually spend, rather than an estimate based on population averages.
- Check what is left. If the total exceeds your take-home income, or cannabis spending is pushing bills or planned savings aside, consider changes before deciding that another job is necessary.
A simple monthly budget planner can help you write down the numbers; a free spreadsheet or notes app can do the same job. A planner organizes information but does not reduce costs or make an unaffordable budget work.
What Canadian spending figures can—and cannot—tell you
Health Canada’s 2024 Canadian Cannabis Survey estimated average monthly cannabis spending at $63.17 among Canadian cannabis consumers in the past 12 months (95% confidence interval: $58.71–$67.62). This is a population estimate, not a recommended amount or a measure of what any particular person can afford. In the detailed table, the 2024 estimates were $55.00 per month for females and $70.80 for males; those group averages are not predictions for individuals. See Health Canada’s 2024 summary and its detailed spending table.

Take care when comparing years: from 2023 onward, the survey asked past-year cannabis consumers about spending in an average month. From 2020 through 2022, it asked past-month consumers about spending in the past month. That change in reference period and population means the figures are not a perfectly comparable time series.
Statistics Canada separately reported average cannabis spending of $150 per person per year among Canadians of legal age in 2022/2023. This is a different population and measure from Health Canada’s monthly estimate, so it should not be converted or compared as if the methods were the same. Statistics Canada describes the National Cannabis Survey as covering both spending habits and total household income; that survey context still does not reveal whether a specific household needs more income. See Statistics Canada’s overview and its National Cannabis Survey description.

When a second job may be one option
If your budget does not balance, extra work is one possible way to increase income, but the population figures above do not establish that cannabis consumers generally need second jobs. First identify the size of the gap and whether it is ongoing. Then compare realistic options, such as adjusting discretionary spending or increasing income. A second job makes sense to consider only in the context of your actual finances and circumstances; the survey averages cannot make that decision for you.
