Selected comparisons reportedly reached a 70% difference—but that was an upper-end example, not a standard solo-traveler surcharge or a finding that applied to every route.
What the 70% claim means
The figure refers to selected fare comparisons reported in 2025. Thrifty Traveler said it searched hundreds of fares and found examples where a lower fare appeared when multiple passengers were selected. Its report does not establish how often this happened across Delta flights, and it is not a representative estimate of fares paid by solo travelers. The Washington Post’s May 31, 2025 coverage noted that the results did not appear on every route and cited Kayak’s assessment that passenger-count differences were inconsistent and not clearly tied to group size.
These reports describe differences in fares displayed for a search, not proof that Delta added a personal-data-based surcharge to an individual traveler. They also do not establish that a solo traveler today will pay more for a particular flight.
How the reported fare rules changed
After the reports drew attention, Thrifty Traveler said it reviewed publicly available rules in ITA Matrix and found that Delta had removed the specific fare rules it had identified as requiring at least two adults for certain lower fares. That is a reported 2025 change to those identified rules; it is not confirmation that every current fare is available to every party size or that passenger-count searches will always return the same price.

What Delta says about its pricing
In a letter dated September 9, 2026, and published September 18, Delta responded to U.S. Representative Frank Pallone’s concerns about AI-assisted “surveillance pricing.” Delta President Peter Carter wrote that “there is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing, or plans to use that targets customers with individualized prices based on personal data.” Delta also described route and flight demand, seat and fare-class availability, competing schedules and offers, historical and forecast demand, and operating costs as factors affecting fares.

Those are Delta’s statements about its own practices, not an independent audit. The company’s letter is published on the Delta News Hub. The 2025 passenger-count reports and the 2026 statement address different questions: one concerns fares displayed in particular searches, while the other is Delta’s position on individualized pricing based on personal data.

- Search for one passenger and note the per-ticket fare, total price, and any fare conditions shown.
- Repeat the search for the full party. Compare both the per-ticket amount and the booking total.
- Check whether the same fare class is available for every traveler. A lower fare shown for one seat may not be available for the whole party.
- Compare results promptly. Delta says fares and schedules may change without notice, seats are limited, and not all fares are available on every flight; purchasing the ticket is what guarantees the quoted fare.
Delta’s published Fares & Discounts and Ticket Rules & Restrictions pages provide the airline’s fare and ticket information. A search result is only a snapshot, not a promise that the price or inventory will remain available.

What travelers can reasonably conclude
- Some selected Delta fare searches in 2025 reportedly showed lower per-ticket prices for two or more passengers than for one.
- The reported upper-end difference was 70%, but it was not a universal surcharge, a prevalence rate, or a representative measure of Delta fares.
- Thrifty Traveler reported that Delta removed the specific two-adult rules it had identified after the issue attracted attention.
- Whether a current group search is cheaper for a particular trip can only be determined by comparing live offers under the same conditions.
