Re:

Do Gen Zers Still Think Teslas Are Cool? What One Intern Survey Found

A reported decline in Tesla desirability among Morgan Stanley interns is a narrow signal, not proof that Gen Z as a whole has turned against the brand.

A 2024 report says Tesla’s share of Morgan Stanley interns naming it a desirable car brand fell from 19% in 2022 to 11% in the latest survey. Mercedes and BMW led that survey. The finding is a limited signal about the interns surveyed—not evidence that Gen Z as a whole has turned against Tesla, or that young people have stopped buying its cars.

What did the survey find?

Futurism reported on August 10, 2024, that Tesla was named the most desirable car brand by 11% of respondents in Morgan Stanley’s latest survey of its interns. The report gives Tesla’s share as 14% in the prior year and 19% in 2022. It says Mercedes and BMW led the latest survey, but does not give their percentages. Futurism’s report is the available source for these figures; the original Morgan Stanley survey was not located.

Survey period as described by Futurism Share naming Tesla desirable
2022 19%
Prior year to the latest survey 14%
Latest survey, reported in 2024 11%

The article does not state the field dates, sample size, exact question wording, response rate, or sampling method. It also does not establish whether survey methods were identical across years, so the figures describe the trend as Futurism reported it rather than a fully documented, independently verified time series.

Does this mean Teslas are no longer cool with Gen Z?

No broad conclusion about Gen Z follows from this survey. Its respondents were Morgan Stanley interns, an occupationally specific group—not a representative sample of everyone born between 1997 and 2012. Futurism itself flags that limitation. The result is best read as a snapshot of brand desirability among those interns, not a measure of young people’s overall views.

Brand desirability also is not the same as purchase behavior or EV ownership. The report does not show what respondents bought, whether they owned cars, or whether they planned to buy a Tesla. Nor does it establish that a lower share of desirability nominations translates into lower sales.

What else did the report say about EV interest?

Futurism says interest in battery-electric vehicles declined for a second consecutive year in the intern survey, but the surfaced report gives no percentage for that decline. It also cites a separate McKinsey result that 46% of U.S. EV owners were considering returning to a gas-powered car. That figure is not about Gen Z or Tesla owners specifically; the report does not identify the McKinsey survey’s year, methodology, or question wording, and the original survey was not verified.

Why might Tesla’s appeal be changing?

The report discusses several possible influences, including Elon Musk’s public conduct and political activity, the availability of EV alternatives, charging and range concerns, and vehicle affordability. It does not show that any one of these factors caused respondents to choose differently. Futurism attributes a possible reputational effect to Edmunds director of insights Ivan Drury, quoting him as saying: “I think that [Musk’s] latest antics have really cost the company. It’s caused problems that never needed to exist.” This is an expert’s interpretation, reported by Futurism as coming from a Business Insider interview—not a demonstrated explanation for the survey results.

What the finding can—and cannot—tell you

  • It can indicate: Tesla’s share of desirability nominations among the surveyed Morgan Stanley interns was reported to have fallen across the three periods.
  • It can indicate: Mercedes and BMW were ahead of Tesla in the latest survey, though their reported shares are not available.
  • It cannot establish: that most Gen Zers dislike Tesla, that Tesla is unpopular with young buyers generally, or that the interns’ preferences caused a change in sales.
  • It cannot explain: why respondents answered as they did, because the report does not provide a causal analysis or the underlying survey methodology.

The headline’s “Zoomers” framing is therefore broader than the evidence. A more precise takeaway is that Tesla’s reported desirability share declined among one group of Morgan Stanley interns, while the available information is not enough to measure a generational shift.
