Some eyelash growth treatments work, but that does not mean every serum does. In the United States, prescription bimatoprost 0.03% (LATISSE) is approved to treat inadequate eyelash growth and has controlled-trial evidence. For over-the-counter serums, evidence depends on the ingredients and is much less conclusive. A 2024 review found limited formal evidence for non-prostaglandin formulas and said other prostaglandin ingredients need more study.
The available sources do not include a dermatologist’s attributed opinion, so this article does not present the findings as a personal dermatologist endorsement.
Which eyelash growth products have evidence behind them?
Prescription bimatoprost
The US prescribing information says LATISSE (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is indicated to treat eyelash hypotrichosis by increasing eyelash length, thickness and darkness. That is a specific prescription product and indication—not evidence that all lash serums work. The US label was updated July 1, 2024.
In a four-month, multicenter, double-masked, randomized, vehicle-controlled study of 278 adults, 78% of participants using LATISSE (107 of 137) had at least a one-grade improvement on the four-point Global Eyelash Assessment scale at week 16, compared with 18% using vehicle (26 of 141). At that point, average eyelash length had increased 1.4 mm (25%) with LATISSE versus 0.1 mm (2%) with vehicle; fullness or thickness increased 106% versus 12%, and darkness increased 18% versus 3%. These are group results from the trial, not a promise of the same change for any one person.

Over-the-counter serums
“Eyelash serum” covers products with different ingredients, so the category cannot be judged as one treatment. A 2024 comprehensive review found bimatoprost efficacy supported by numerous studies. It said other prostaglandin ingredients may offer benefits but need additional research, while non-prostaglandin ingredients have promising data but lack sufficient formal evidence specifically for use in eyelash serums. The review does not establish that every OTC formula is ineffective—or that any particular brand is proven.
How soon might results appear?
The LATISSE trial measured its main outcome at week 16, and the label reports statistically significant differences from vehicle at weeks 8 and 12 as well. The label’s nightly-use directions and trial timeline do not establish a guaranteed date or degree of change for an individual. The cited review does not provide a comparable timeline for OTC products as a category.

What are the risks of prescription bimatoprost?
The US label reports eye itching, conjunctival hyperemia (redness) and skin hyperpigmentation at approximately 3% to 4% each. It also warns that eyelid skin and iris pigmentation may occur; iris pigmentation is likely permanent. Hair may grow in areas where the solution repeatedly contacts skin outside the intended application area. Read the current label and discuss potential risks with the prescribing clinician.

The label directs users to apply the solution nightly to the upper eyelid margin with a sterile, disposable applicator, using one applicator per eye, and to blot away excess. Growth is expected to move back toward pretreatment levels after discontinuation. Follow the product’s current prescribing instructions rather than adapting the method for another serum.

How to assess a lash serum before buying
- Check the active ingredient. Bimatoprost has substantial evidence and a US prescription indication; other prostaglandin ingredients and non-prostaglandin formulas should not be assumed to have the same evidence.
- Look for evidence on the actual product or ingredient. A class-level review cannot establish the results or safety of every brand or formula.
- Check local status. The cited indication and prescribing information are US-specific. Prescription and regulatory status can differ by country.
- Weigh the safety information. For bimatoprost, the label describes eye and skin effects, possible pigmentation, and unintended hair growth from skin contact.
