They may. There is no single expiration deadline established for every digital Xbox Game Pass subscription code. Check the specific code’s terms, the retailer listing or the email it came with; if no deadline is clear, ask the seller or issuer before relying on the code.
Why there isn’t one expiration rule for every code
A Game Pass subscription code and an Xbox gift card are different products, and their terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Microsoft’s code-redemption guidance covers gift cards, Xbox download codes and tokens, but it does not establish one deadline for all third-party Game Pass subscription codes. For an individual code, the terms attached to that offer are the relevant place to look.
How to check an unredeemed code
- Find the code’s original terms. Check the email, retailer listing, card or receipt for an expiration date or a “redeem by” deadline.
- Confirm what the code is for. Note the Game Pass tier and duration, whether it is a retail or promotional offer, and any account-state requirements.
- Check the region. Make sure the country or region for which the code was sold matches the account and redemption requirements.
- Ask before redeeming if anything is unclear. Contact the seller or issuer to confirm the deadline and what support or return options apply.
Microsoft advises customers who bought the wrong code to contact the retailer. If a code that appears valid is rejected, verify the account and region, then contact the seller or Microsoft support.
How gift cards and promotional balances differ
Microsoft says that Xbox gift cards purchased at retail do not expire. It also says promotional gift cards, including examples from Microsoft Rewards or Xbox Game Pass Rewards, do expire. That guidance is specifically about gift cards; it does not prove that a separate Game Pass subscription code has the same terms.

Microsoft’s gift-card terms make a similar distinction for account funds: non-promotional Microsoft account balance does not expire, while promotional balance is subject to the promotion’s expiration terms. For promotional value, check the offer terms and any expiration information shown for the account.
What to do after redeeming a code
Once redeemed, a code has been applied to the Microsoft account used for redemption. To check a subscription’s status or relevant end or renewal date, sign in to that account and open Services & subscriptions. The subscription’s end date is separate from any deadline that may have applied to the unused code.

If the code added account balance rather than subscription time, review the balance in the account. Promotional balance may have its own expiration terms; non-promotional balance does not expire under Microsoft’s gift-card terms.

- Game Pass tier and subscription duration
- Eligible country or region
- Whether the offer is retail or promotional
- Any explicit redemption deadline
- Seller or issuer support and return terms
- Whether the code adds time to an existing subscription or requires a particular account state
Microsoft’s prepaid-subscription guidance describes a download code or single-use token as a prepaid payment method and directs account holders to their subscription details. It does not supply a universal expiration period for all codes.
