Sometimes—but usually not as a free, permanent Microsoft 365 subscription. A new Windows computer may include a Microsoft 365 trial, a subscription for a limited period, a one-time Office license, free web apps, or no paid desktop Office license at all.
The words pre-installed describe software already on the computer. They do not prove that Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook are permanently licensed. Check the exact computer configuration before buying, and check the Microsoft account used during setup after buying.

The four things a new computer may include
| What the listing says | What you generally get | What happens later |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 30-day trial | Temporary access to subscription features, often for eligible new subscribers | Payment may begin after the trial unless you cancel |
| Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, one year | A subscription for the stated term | Renewal is normally required to keep subscription benefits |
| Office Home 2024 | A one-time license for one PC or Mac | You can keep using that version, but future major upgrades are not included |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | A one-time license that includes Outlook and permits applicable business use | It does not become a Microsoft 365 cloud-services subscription |
| No Additional Office Software | No paid desktop Office license | Use free web apps or buy a license separately |
For example, current U.S. Dell configurations can offer a one-month Microsoft 365 trial as an option, while Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024 are paid choices. HP configurations can list “No Additional Office Software” alongside paid Microsoft 365 and Office options. These are model-specific examples, not brand-wide rules. See the Dell product configuration and HP configuration example.
“Pre-installed,” “included,” and “activated” mean different things
- Pre-installed: The applications or setup components are already on the computer.
- Included: The computer’s price includes some type of license or promotional access. That might be a trial, a one-year subscription, or a perpetual Office license.
- Activated: The license has been linked to a Microsoft account, device, or product key and the desktop apps can be used under that license.
You can see Word and Excel icons in the Start menu even when the apps are unactivated, connected to an expired trial, or directing you to use the browser versions. An icon is evidence that software is present—not that you received a free license.

“Office” is also an umbrella term. It can mean Microsoft 365 desktop apps, Office Home 2024, Office Home & Business 2024, an older perpetual edition, free web apps, or Microsoft’s app launcher. Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 are different products and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Microsoft 365 versus Office Home 2024
| Feature | Microsoft 365 Personal or Family | Office Home 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Payment model | Recurring subscription | One-time purchase |
| Desktop apps | Included while subscribed | Included |
| Feature updates | Included during the subscription | Future major versions require another purchase |
| Cloud services | Includes connected services such as OneDrive storage, according to the plan | Not the Microsoft 365 service bundle |
| Devices | Multiple devices, according to the plan | One PC or Mac |
| Best fit | Multiple devices, cloud storage, sharing, and ongoing updates | One computer and no recurring payment |
Microsoft describes Microsoft 365 as a subscription with ongoing features, security updates, bug fixes, and services. Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac. It includes classic home or school applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but not a free entitlement to the next major Office version. Microsoft’s comparison of Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 explains the distinction.
“Perpetual” or “lifetime Office” is consumer shorthand that can mislead. It generally means continued use of the version you purchased without a recurring subscription—not lifetime feature upgrades or every future Office release.
What Dell, HP, and Lenovo show
Manufacturers do not use one universal policy. The exact model, retailer, country, promotion, and configuration determine what is offered.
- Dell: Cited U.S. configurations offered a free one-month Microsoft 365 trial, with Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024 available as paid add-ons. Dell’s trial warning says a credit card is required and subscription fees apply unless the subscription is canceled. See the Dell configuration example.
- HP: Current U.S. pages can show no additional Office software as the base choice, with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Office Home 2024, and Office Home & Business 2024 offered separately. See the HP configuration example.
- Lenovo: Lenovo’s U.S. legal-information page says that when no Office 2024 or Microsoft 365 license is included, a one-month Microsoft 365 trial for new Microsoft 365 customers may be supplied. It also warns that consumer Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, and Family plans do not include commercial-use rights. See Lenovo’s terms.
ASUS and other brands can vary in the same way. Look for the exact product’s “Office,” “Productivity software,” or “Software included” section rather than relying on the manufacturer’s name.
How to check before you buy
- Open the exact model and configuration page—not just a general product family page.
- Find the section labeled Office, Microsoft 365, Productivity software, or Software included.
- Identify whether the option says trial, one-year subscription, one-time purchase, or no additional Office software.
- Read the quantity: one person or several people, and one device or multiple devices.
- Look for automatic-renewal language and whether a payment method is required.
- Save the configuration, invoice, and any redemption instructions before checkout.
- Check how the license is delivered: account association, email code, product key, or device-based activation.
Do not assume that “Microsoft 365 included” means a permanent benefit. It may mean only a trial, a promotional subscription term, or software that is ready to download but not licensed until you sign in.

How to activate Office after setup
- Finish Windows setup and connect the computer to the internet.
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the license. If the computer belongs to a household, avoid accidentally attaching it to the wrong person’s account.
- Follow the activation or redemption prompt.
- Open the account’s Services & subscriptions area to confirm that the subscription or Office entitlement appears.
- Close and reopen the Office application if the license does not appear immediately.

Check the Microsoft account first. Then confirm whether the trial expired, whether the manufacturer-supplied license still needs redemption, and whether the computer was returned, replaced, or reimaged. Also check for conflicting Office installations, an internet connection needed for activation, and a mismatch between the installed edition and the edition purchased.
If the computer was sold with an Office entitlement and that entitlement is missing, retain the invoice and original configuration. The manufacturer may need to correct a missing digital license, code, or incorrect configuration. Many current purchases use account-based activation instead of a printed product key.
What happens when a Microsoft 365 trial ends?
A trial is not free forever. It may require a Microsoft account and payment method, and it can renew automatically after the trial period unless canceled. If you do not want a charge, review the renewal date and cancellation settings in the Microsoft account used to start the trial.
Canceling Microsoft 365 does not necessarily uninstall Word, Excel, or the other applications. The software files can remain on the computer while the subscription’s activation rights change. Depending on the product and account status, desktop apps may become limited or read-only. You can then buy a license or use Microsoft’s free browser-based apps.

Which option is cheapest for your needs?
Choose Microsoft 365 when:
- You use several computers, tablets, or phones.
- You want OneDrive storage and synchronization.
- You want the latest desktop features and continuing updates.
- A household will share the plan. Microsoft describes Family as supporting up to six people under its current terms.
Microsoft 365 Personal is generally aimed at one person. Family can make more financial sense for multiple eligible household users, but compare the current plan terms and renewal cost before choosing. Plan names, prices, storage, and AI features can change; consult Microsoft’s current plan comparison.

Choose Office Home 2024 when:
- You mainly use one PC or Mac.
- You want Word, Excel, and PowerPoint without a recurring bill.
- You do not need the Microsoft 365 cloud bundle.
- You accept that a future major Office version will be a separate purchase.
Choose Office Home & Business 2024 when:
- You need Outlook included.
- You need a one-time purchase for permitted home-office or small-business use.
- You do not need Microsoft 365’s multi-device and cloud-service bundle.
Do not buy a consumer plan for business use without checking the applicable rights. Office Home 2024 and Microsoft 365 consumer plans are not automatically equivalent to business licensing.
Use free alternatives when:
- You need only basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- You are comfortable working in a browser.
- You do not need full desktop features, advanced Excel compatibility, offline work, or complete Outlook integration.
Microsoft’s free web apps work well for basic browser-based tasks. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are useful for collaboration, while LibreOffice provides a free installed suite. Compatibility with complex Office formatting, macros, and specialized business workflows can vary.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Seeing an app icon and assuming it is licensed: Installed software can still require activation.
- Confusing a trial with a subscription included for one year: Both may be described casually as “Microsoft 365 included,” but their duration and renewal consequences differ.
- Assuming a license transfers automatically: Transfer rights depend on whether the license is OEM, retail, Microsoft 365, or institution-provided. Review the applicable terms; Microsoft’s pre-installed Office license terms address software supplied with a device.
- Buying Office twice: Check whether an employer, school, family member, or existing Microsoft account already provides access. Education eligibility depends on the institution and is not a universal free consumer offer.
- Ignoring the seller: If a license was bundled by Dell, HP, Lenovo, or another seller, that seller may be responsible for fixing a missing entitlement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do laptops come with Word and Excel?
They may have Word and Excel pre-installed, but that does not guarantee a paid license. The computer may include a trial, a one-time Office license, free web access, or no desktop license.
Is Microsoft 365 free on Windows?
Microsoft offers free browser-based Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but the full desktop Microsoft 365 apps and subscription services generally require a subscription or another valid license.
Can I use Office without internet?
A properly activated desktop Office installation can support offline work, but periodic internet access may be needed for subscription checks and activation. Free web apps require an internet connection.
Why is Office asking me to subscribe when I bought a computer?
The computer may include only a trial, the wrong Microsoft account may be signed in, the included license may need redemption, or the installed edition may not match the purchase.
Can I transfer Office to another computer?
There is no universal answer. Transfer rules depend on the license type and purchase channel, including whether it is an OEM license, retail license, Microsoft 365 subscription, or institution-provided entitlement.
