CDK Global Cyber Incident Disrupted Car Dealerships Across North America in June 2024

A June 2024 cyber incident at CDK Global disrupted sales, service scheduling, customer records and back-office work at participating dealerships across North America.

This was a June 2024 cyber incident involving CDK Global, a dealership-management software provider—not a universal failure of every car dealership or automaker system. CDK shut down most of its systems twice after reporting an initial cyber incident and then an additional incident late on June 19. The disruption affected participating dealerships’ sales records, customer information, service scheduling, communications and back-office operations.

CDK said its software supported approximately 15,000 dealerships in North America, but that figure was its customer footprint—not a confirmed count of dealerships that were completely offline.

What happened to the dealership computer systems?

On June 19, 2024, CDK Global said it was investigating a cyber incident and had proactively shut down most of its systems “out of an abundance of caution” to protect customers. Some critical systems were reportedly restored later that day.

Late on June 19, CDK reported an additional cyber incident. The company again took most systems offline while it assessed the impact with third-party experts. On June 20, dealers were told to expect at least another full day of disruption.

The second shutdown made clear that this was more than a routine software or internet outage. CDK was responding to a security incident and containment effort. Contemporary coverage from Forbes, CNN/ABC7 and CNN/WSVN described the incident and its operational effects.

Important date clarification: The headline refers to the historical June 2024 event. It should not be read as evidence that dealerships are experiencing the same CDK outage on September 5, 2026.

How many dealerships were affected?

CDK said its services supported about 15,000 auto dealerships in North America. That gave the incident a potentially broad reach across the United States and Canada.

However, “15,000 dealerships were hit” is too precise and too broad. Not every dealership used CDK, and CDK customers could use different products or modules. The severity also depended on a dealership’s configuration, department and ability to work around unavailable systems.

A more accurate description is that the outage potentially disrupted operations at dealerships using CDK products. Some locations may have had serious interruptions across sales, service and administration, while others retained independent systems or continued selected work manually.

What does dealership-management software do?

A dealer-management system acts as shared operational infrastructure. It can connect information and workflows that would otherwise be spread across separate departments. Reported affected functions included:

This does not mean that every function failed at every CDK customer. It means that losing access to a central platform can affect much more than the ability to look up a vehicle.

What did the outage mean for car buyers?

A customer might still have been able to visit a showroom, inspect a vehicle or speak with a salesperson. The difficulty often came later, when the dealership needed to retrieve records, complete financing, prepare compliance documents, post the transaction to accounting or arrange delivery.

Potential customer effects included:

  • Delayed purchases: A deal already entered into the system could be difficult to retrieve or complete.
  • Financing delays: Lender documents, approvals and finance workflows could take longer or require manual handling.
  • Postponed delivery: A vehicle could be available while title, payment, accounting or compliance steps remained incomplete.
  • Service disruption: Appointments could be delayed, rescheduled or recorded manually.
  • Repeated information: Customers might have to provide identification, insurance details, appointment information or prior repair history again.
  • Communication gaps: A dealership’s normal customer-contact history or internal messaging could be temporarily unavailable.

The practical response was to contact the specific dealership before visiting. One CDK customer could have had a different status from another, even in the same region.

How did dealerships keep operating?

Many dealerships reverted to paper-based processes and other independent tools. Staff could write down customer details, prepare paper repair orders, use phones or email, and walk instructions or work orders to technicians. Some also used spreadsheets or other systems that were not dependent on CDK.

Service work can sometimes continue this way if a technician has the vehicle, diagnosis and work instructions. Sales and finance are more complicated because they require coordinated records, lender documents, signatures, compliance checks, accounting entries and secure storage of the completed deal.

Manual processing keeps work moving, but it is not a complete substitute for a connected system. It can create duplicate entries, missing information, incorrect billing, privacy exposure and substantial reconciliation work after systems return. Dealerships also have to determine which paper records were already entered, which transactions changed and which customer communications need to be recreated.

What was confirmed—and what was not?

Confirmed in the early reporting Not established by those reports
CDK was investigating a cyber incident. The attacker’s identity.
CDK shut down most systems. The precise intrusion method.
A second incident led to another shutdown. Whether every CDK dealership was affected equally.
CDK used third-party experts while assessing the impact. Whether customer data was stolen.
Dealership operations were disrupted. Whether a ransom was paid.

The distinction matters. A cyber incident can make systems unavailable without publicly establishing that customer data was exfiltrated. Early reports did not identify the attacker, confirm the exact attack method or establish that every dealership customer’s information had been stolen.

Accordingly, it is safer to describe the event as a CDK cyber incident unless a later first-party disclosure, court filing, regulator notice, law-enforcement statement or clearly sourced report supports a more specific characterization such as ransomware.

Why could one provider cause such a broad disruption?

The incident illustrates concentration risk in business technology. A specialized provider can give thousands of dealerships standardized workflows, shared records and economies of scale. The same centralization means that one security event can affect many businesses at once.

A dealership may have backups for a failed computer, network connection or local server. That does not necessarily provide an immediately usable replacement for a central platform linking sales, service, finance and accounting. Backing up data and maintaining an alternative way to operate are different preparedness problems.

For dealerships, the lesson is not simply to print more forms. A workable continuity plan should define how each department operates offline, how sensitive paper records are secured, how transactions are timestamped, how staff avoid duplicate work and how manually created records are reconciled after restoration.

Practical checklist for dealership customers

  1. Call before visiting. Ask whether the location’s sales or service systems are operating and what is delayed.
  2. Bring key documents. Identification, insurance information, financing paperwork, appointment confirmations and prior repair details may be useful.
  3. Ask what stage is affected. Separate vehicle availability from financing approval, contract completion, delivery and service scheduling.
  4. Protect sensitive information. Confirm a dealership’s email address and instructions before sending identification, income documents or payment information.
  5. Get written records. Keep estimates, receipts, promised delivery dates, payment confirmations and any manually completed paperwork.

What dealerships should do during a comparable outage

  • Maintain documented manual procedures for sales, service, parts, accounting and customer communications.
  • Use the minimum necessary personal information on paper and store it securely.
  • Record transaction times, responsible staff members and status changes for later reconciliation.
  • Keep an offline contact tree for vendors, lenders and incident-response personnel.
  • Prepare a controlled process for re-entering manual records after restoration.
  • Reconcile duplicate customer, inventory, repair-order and accounting entries.
  • Do not reconnect systems or restore backups without direction from the incident-response team.
  • Verify urgent vendor instructions through established channels to reduce phishing risk.
