Yes. If she is subject to Medicare’s income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA), Social Security generally uses tax information from two years earlier, so a 2025 joint return may affect her 2027 Part B and Part D adjustments. A finalized divorce can qualify her to request a new determination using more recent income information—but the decree alone does not remove the effect of the joint return or guarantee a lower premium. She can ask SSA to review her case after the marriage legally ends.
Can a 2025 joint return raise her 2027 Medicare premium two years later?
Usually, SSA uses modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) from the tax year two years before the Medicare premium year to determine IRMAA. MAGI for this purpose is adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest. That makes tax year 2025 the usual reference for 2027, although SSA policy allows it to use three-year-old information if two-year-old data is unavailable. See SSA’s MAGI and lookback policy and its IRMAA overview.
A joint return can therefore be the income record SSA initially uses, even if the couple later divorces. The premium year’s applicable IRMAA thresholds and her income and filing status determine whether that record places her in a higher tier.
Will her divorce lower her Medicare premium?
Possibly, but not automatically. Federal rules recognize a marriage ending through divorce or annulment as a life-changing event. SSA may make a new initial determination when the event significantly reduces MAGI or changes filing status in a way that affects the applicable threshold. The divorce decree by itself does not cancel the joint return’s effect; SSA must review the request and supporting information. See 20 CFR § 418.1205 and SSA’s policy on new initial determinations.

The legal timing matters. SSA-44 instructions say the marriage must have ended legally, and she must not be filing a joint return with her former spouse for the tax year she asks SSA to use. The divorce event date must be in the same year as or earlier than that requested tax year. If the divorce is still pending, she should not treat the decree-related event as completed for this request.
When can she ask SSA to use more recent income?
She can request review after the legal divorce if it has caused, or is expected to cause, a qualifying income reduction or relevant filing-status change. The request is for a new SSA determination of income-related Part B and Part D adjustments—not a change to the tax return itself. SSA-44 permits reporting an income decrease that has already occurred or is anticipated during this year or next year. Its Step 3 is for an additional decrease expected the following year.

The form is optional: she may submit SSA-44 or contact Social Security to discuss the request and arrange an appointment. SSA provides submission information through its IRMAA request page.
What information and proof should she gather?
- Proof the marriage ended: SSA’s divorce policy calls for evidence of termination, such as documentation of the divorce or annulment.
- Income information for the tax year requested: If she has filed that year’s return, SSA-44 instructions call for a signed copy or an IRS transcript. SSA may consider an estimate if the return has not yet been filed, subject to the agency’s review and evidence requirements.
- Details supporting the income change: SSA asks for evidence of both the life-changing event and the more recent or accurate income information. The exact documents depend on the circumstances. See SSA’s divorce-specific evidence policy and 20 CFR § 418.1265.
The current SSA-44 form edition identified here is 12-2025. Use the form’s own instructions and current SSA submission guidance; SSA makes the determination. The form is available directly from Social Security.

What 2027 premium or income threshold should she expect?
Do not use 2026 thresholds as if they were 2027 figures. SSA’s published 2026 MAGI thresholds include $109,000 for individual filing statuses and $218,000 for married filing jointly; those are 2026 thresholds, not 2027 IRMAA thresholds. The official sources cited here do not establish 2027 brackets or her eventual premium. Her result depends on the applicable 2027 table, MAGI, filing status, and Medicare enrollment facts. See SSA’s threshold and MAGI policy.
