Ditching Meta? What Pixelfed, Loops and Sup Actually Offer After Their Kickstarter

Pixelfed is the most established project; Loops was early-stage and Sup unreleased when the 2025 Kickstarter was reported. Here is what users can realistically expect.

Short answer: Pixelfed is the only one of the three projects that was clearly established and usable when the Kickstarter campaign was reported on January 24, 2025. Loops was an early federated short-video project, while Sup was still planned rather than publicly released. The campaign sought money for a broader open-source ecosystem—not a finished, one-for-one replacement for Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp.

The projects can reduce dependence on Meta, but they also bring smaller audiences, fragmented moderation, uneven mobile support and more responsibility for users and server operators.

What the Kickstarter campaign funded

Daniel Supernault, the developer associated with Pixelfed, Loops and Sup, launched the campaign covered by TechCrunch on January 24, 2025. TechCrunch reported C$58,383 raised at the time it published. That was a live snapshot, not a verified final total; the campaign page at Kickstarter was not available for automated verification.

The proposed uses of funds were a package of development and infrastructure work:

  • Pixelfed mobile and server development.
  • Loops development and a public release.
  • Sup development and access intended for Kickstarter supporters.
  • PubKit, a testing and debugging toolkit for ActivityPub developers.
  • Storage, content-delivery networks, computing capacity and scaling.
  • Moderation, security, privacy and safety work.
  • A proposed Pixelfed Foundation nonprofit structure and potential hiring beyond volunteers.
  • A possible future blogging service aimed at audiences familiar with Tumblr or LiveJournal.
  • Longer-term plans for end-to-end encryption across parts of the fediverse.

Supernault told TechCrunch he hoped to raise C$1 million or more to hire a small team. That was an aspiration, not a minimum campaign requirement or proof that the money was raised. Funding a project also does not establish that every promised feature shipped.

Pixelfed: the most practical starting point

Pixelfed is an open-source photo-sharing service with video support. Its official site describes it as ad-free, privacy-focused, decentralized and compatible with ActivityPub. Its AGPL-licensed GitHub repository provides the code and self-hosting documentation. The latest release visible in the retrieved repository material was v0.12.7, dated February 17, 2026; check the repository for any later release.

Pixelfed is not one global database. It is a federation of independently operated servers, commonly called instances. You choose an instance, create an account there and can usually interact with users on compatible servers. Pixelfed says its network can interact with remote Pixelfed, Mastodon and Akkoma profiles and posts.

What users get

The official feature list includes albums, comments, direct messages, filters, stories, follower approval, blocking, reporting, follower-only posts and controls over comments and messages. Feed behavior is generally more chronological and community-oriented than Instagram’s advertising and recommendation system. Features can still vary by server, software version and client.

Pixelfed’s site lists iOS and Android options plus third-party clients such as Pixeldroid, Impressia, Fedilab, Tusker and Pixelix at its mobile-apps page. Availability, country support and feature parity should be checked in your own app store. The site displays 1.2 million users, 2,100 servers and more than 55 million shared photos and videos; those are first-party figures, retrieved for this article on August 16–18, 2026, rather than an independent census.

Choosing an instance

Pixelfed says joining an existing server is the easiest route. Before signing up, read the instance’s rules and privacy policy, check its location and moderation contacts, and look for recent maintenance information. The operator controls uptime, local moderation, retention and backups. A different instance may have different limits or block different parts of the fediverse.

Self-hosting gives an organization more control, but it is an operations project rather than a consumer toggle. A domain, VPS or dedicated server, database administration, object storage, email delivery, backups, updates, abuse handling and security monitoring may all be required. The public code does not make those tasks disappear.

What happens if a server closes?

Federation does not guarantee account portability. You may be able to export posts or followers and redirect an account, but migration support and data export depend on the software and instance. Direct messages, usernames and media may not transfer cleanly. Ask the operator what export and account-move tools are available before building a business or archive there.

Loops: a federated TikTok-style experiment

Loops is intended to be a federated short-video platform connected to the fediverse. Its server repository describes an AGPLv3 project and says it is funded through NGI Zero Core, with Fastly providing CDN and object-storage support through its Fast Forward program.

In the January 2025 report, Loops was still in alpha testing through Apple’s TestFlight. That is a historical status, not a statement of availability in October 2026. Before relying on it, verify whether public registration is open, whether iOS and Android clients exist, which servers accept users, upload limits and formats, moderation tools, discovery, and federation with other ActivityPub services.

Why it is not yet a drop-in TikTok replacement

A short-video network needs expensive storage and bandwidth, reliable transcoding, abuse response and effective discovery. It may have a chronological, local or manually curated feed rather than TikTok’s mature recommendation engine. There is no evidence in the supplied material of a stable creator monetization system, advanced analytics, brand tools or a TikTok-sized audience. Treat Loops as an early-adopter option unless its current documentation demonstrates otherwise.

Sup: a planned messaging product that needs verification

Sup was presented as a WhatsApp/Snapchat alternative, but it had not launched when TechCrunch published its report. Kickstarter supporters were expected to receive access. The project has an official profile at pixelfed.social/supapp, but the retrieved material does not establish a public release, supported devices or a verified security design.

Keep four claims separate:

  1. Open-source intention: a project may plan to publish code.
  2. Product plan: campaign rewards and announcements describe intended features.
  3. Availability: users need a working, publicly documented signup and supported clients.
  4. Security: end-to-end encryption, metadata handling, backups and recovery require technical documentation and preferably independent audit evidence.

The campaign’s discussion of future end-to-end encryption in the fediverse does not prove that Sup launched with default, audited end-to-end encryption. Until release status, encryption design, device support, backups and account recovery are documented, Sup should not be treated as a proven WhatsApp replacement.

Federation in plain English

A centralized service puts most infrastructure and policy under one company. A federated network uses multiple servers operated by different people or organizations that communicate through a shared protocol. The basic path is:

User → chosen server → ActivityPub → other compatible servers

This can reduce dependence on one company’s feed, advertising and account rules. It does not eliminate dependencies: a server still needs hosting, a domain, software maintainers, app stores and often a CDN. Your experience depends on the chosen server’s rules, uptime, moderation, software version and resources. Servers can block one another, search can be incomplete and popular instances can become overloaded.

Open source is not automatically private

Open source means that specified code is available under a license. It does not by itself mean the hosted operator cannot read data, that logs contain no metadata, that messages are end-to-end encrypted, that production code matches the public repository, or that every server has equal security and backups.

Pixelfed’s official site makes no-ad and data-use claims for its service. Attribute those claims to Pixelfed and check the terms of the particular instance. Running Pixelfed yourself changes whom you trust, but it also makes you responsible for patching, access controls, backups and incident response.

How the alternatives compare

Dimension Instagram TikTok WhatsApp Pixelfed Loops Sup
Primary use Photos, video and creators Short video Messaging and calls Photos and video Short video Messaging/social communication
Architecture Centralized Centralized Centralized Federated Intended to be federated Must be verified
Code availability Proprietary Proprietary Must be assessed by component AGPL-licensed source repository AGPLv3 server repository Verify current repository and license
Advertising Meta advertising ecosystem Advertising ecosystem Business and platform ecosystem Official site says no ads Not established Not established
Discovery Centralized algorithmic feed Strongly algorithmic feed Contact-based More chronological/community-based Current system must be checked Not established
Moderation Centralized policy enforcement Centralized policy enforcement Centralized service rules Instance and federation controls Instance and project controls Not established
Maturity in the January 2025 report Very mature Very mature Very mature Established Alpha Unreleased
Network effect Very large Very large Very large Smaller and distributed Emerging Unknown

WhatsApp has historically advertised end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls, although encryption properties differ by feature and product. The meaningful comparison is therefore control, centralization, data practices, interoperability and dependence—not a blanket claim that every Meta service is unencrypted.

Which path makes sense?

Try Pixelfed for photo sharing

Pixelfed is the strongest choice if you want open-source software, community-operated servers, a less advertising-driven feed and ActivityPub federation. Keep Instagram temporarily if you need its reach, creator analytics, brand relationships or uniform support.

Experiment with Loops, but keep your main channel

Loops may suit users who accept incomplete features and a smaller audience. Do not make it your sole creator-business channel until current access, analytics, moderation, uptime and monetization are documented.

Use a mature messenger instead of waiting for Sup

If your immediate requirement is secure messaging, evaluate established options such as Signal or Matrix clients such as Element. Look for documented encryption, safety-number or identity verification, desktop support, backups, recovery and a user base your contacts will actually use. Open-source branding alone is not a security guarantee.

Self-host only with operational capacity

Self-hosting can improve control for a community, publisher or organization, but budget for hosting, storage, delivery, backups, patching, moderation and legal responsibility. It is not automatically cheaper or safer than joining a well-run instance.

A practical parallel-migration plan

  1. Create an account on a suitable Pixelfed instance or verify access to Loops.
  2. Read the server’s rules, privacy policy, export policy and moderation contacts.
  3. Follow or invite the contacts and creators who matter most.
  4. Cross-post selected photos or videos while keeping the established account active.
  5. Move important conversations through a mature messenger only after confirming identity and recovery procedures.
  6. Export archives, check usernames and test account recovery before deleting any Meta account.

Risks to understand before leaving Meta

  • Fragmentation: servers can block one another, differ in features or disappear.
  • Moderation inconsistency: local autonomy can mean uneven enforcement and difficult appeals.
  • Infrastructure expense: video storage, bandwidth, moderation and backups remain costly even when software is free.
  • Maintainer concentration: public code does not prevent leadership, release management or finances from depending on a small team.
  • Weak migration tooling: followers, archives, direct messages and business workflows may not move cleanly.
  • Network effects: friends, customers and audiences may stay on Meta.

The campaign showed interest in building a less centralized social ecosystem. It did not, by itself, prove final funding, product delivery, security audits or sustainable scale. Check each project’s current documentation before treating an announced feature as available.
