The latest New Zealand CIO Innovation Awards were presented in Auckland on 4 August 2026. The winners ranged from Contact Energy’s enterprise transformation and FortySouth’s AI-enhanced digital twins to Pūhoro STEMM’s Māori technology pathways, showing that New Zealand’s technology leadership is being judged by measurable business, customer, security, workforce and community outcomes—not by novelty alone.

What the NZ CIO Innovation Awards recognise

The awards sit within the annual New Zealand CIO Innovation Summit and recognise individuals and teams for leadership, innovation and foresight across information and communications technology and business. The programme has operated for nearly two decades as an industry-led enterprise-technology platform, rather than as a government or regulatory award. See the organiser’s category and nomination criteria for eligibility details.

When and where were the latest awards held?

The 2026 ceremony took place on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, at the New Zealand International Convention Centre, 101 Hobson Street, Auckland. It formed part of the CIO Innovation Summit, held on 4–5 August 2026. Event details are listed by Tech New Zealand.

From AI to operational results

Tighe Wall and Contact Energy

Contact Energy’s chief technology and transformation officer, Tighe Wall, was recognised for an enterprise programme aligned with the company’s five-year growth strategy. The published profile says ICT, data, digital and acquisition-technology teams were brought into one function, with AI deployed across generation, retail and corporate operations.

  • Cost to serve was reported as falling 30%.
  • Self-service adoption was reported as rising from 30% to 80%.
  • Contact created Māpuna, an in-house geothermal-management platform built on 70 years of operational data.

Those percentages and the Māpuna description are claims in the award profile. They show the type of evidence the judges valued, but they should not be treated as independently verified benchmarks or as proof that custom software is generally cheaper than commercial products. A proprietary platform can make sense when an organisation’s data and operating context are unusually distinctive; it also creates continuing engineering, governance and maintenance obligations.

NZ Post: transformation rather than installation

NZ Post won the business-transformation category for a programme spanning infrastructure, operating models, parcel movement, administrative workflows, frontline operations and customer touchpoints. The rationale emphasised the breadth and complexity of the change rather than one platform launch.

That distinction matters. A technology implementation installs or configures a tool. Business transformation changes how work is organised, decisions are made and customers are served. The latter requires process redesign, adoption and sustained leadership alongside the technology.

FortySouth’s digital twins

FortySouth’s programme models New Zealand’s mobile-tower network with AI-enhanced digital twins so engineers, planners, sales teams and mobile operators can collaborate virtually. The organiser reports 40–50% lower engineering effort for upgrades, more than 1,000 avoided physical site visits or truck rolls in one year, carbon savings and at least one insight that prevented a costly tower replacement. The programme also created a sector centre of excellence.

These are specific results for that programme, not a general performance promise for digital twins. The value came from linking the model to real infrastructure decisions and sharing the capability across teams.

Suncorp New Zealand: customer value in the back end

Suncorp New Zealand addressed 19 largely disconnected systems that frontline staff had been navigating. The published rationale connects the work with productivity, service quality, customer and broker experience, and organisational capability.

The example treats customer value as an operational-design problem. Customers may never see the back-end systems, but reducing needless hand-offs and duplicated work can improve the service they receive.

Cybersecurity as leadership and governance

Aram Raof-Karim’s Emerging ICT Leader award demonstrates that technology excellence is also about institutional risk management. The University of Otago profile says Raof-Karim established a factual cybersecurity risk baseline, managed more than 100 real-world security incidents, introduced AI-assisted threat modelling, replaced a failing security operations centre at a fraction of its original cost, connected strategy to execution through a “Golden Thread” approach and mentored future cybersecurity professionals.

The category description refers to leaders under 35, but the published profile does not separately verify Raof-Karim’s age. “AI-assisted” describes the organiser’s account; it does not, by itself, establish that AI made the security programme safer. The important lesson is the combination of measurable risk visibility, response capability, accountability and people development.

People, inclusion and Aotearoa-specific impact

Pūhoro STEMM

Pūhoro STEMM won Innovation for Impact and Purpose for a nationally scaled, culturally grounded programme supporting rangatahi Māori in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and emerging technologies. The published description links the programme to STEMM participation, tertiary education, future technology careers and wider participation in New Zealand’s digital economy.

This is not a token diversity add-on. It broadens the definition of technology excellence to include who can enter the sector, whose culture is reflected in learning pathways and whether national capability is being built beyond existing professional networks.

AsureQuality

AsureQuality’s team-culture and inclusion award recognised communities of practice, strategic planning, modern ways of working, frontline connection and workforce confidence. The profile presents transformation as a movement involving employees, rather than as an isolated AI or digital project owned by a technical department.

That approach carries a trade-off: rapid automation may reduce effort and cost, but durable gains require consultation, reskilling, job redesign and clear accountability for decisions affected by new systems.

Graeme Muller

Graeme Muller received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Technology and Business in New Zealand. The organisers cite his role as chief executive of Tech New Zealand since 2014 and his efforts to connect industry, government and education while promoting technology’s role in innovation, productivity, economic growth, digital skills and workforce development. This is the organisers’ assessment of his sector contribution, not a claim that every stakeholder holds an identical view.

What the 2026 results say about New Zealand’s priorities

  • Strategic alignment: Winning work was tied to growth, service, resilience or national capability rather than technology for its own sake.
  • Measured outcomes: Cost, adoption, engineering effort, avoided travel, service quality and participation featured more prominently than product features.
  • Responsible emerging technology: AI and digital twins were presented alongside risk controls, operational decisions and accountability.
  • Operational simplicity: Fragmented workflows and back-end complexity were treated as customer problems.
  • Human adoption: Culture, trust, communities of practice and workforce capability were part of the delivery model.
  • Inclusion and equity: Māori participation and culturally relevant education were recognised as technology outcomes in their own right.
  • Environmental efficiency: Avoided truck rolls and carbon savings appeared as practical benefits of digital infrastructure work.
  • Scalability and resilience: The examples operated across national networks, complex enterprises or cross-sector ecosystems.

How 2026 differs from 2025

The 2025 ceremony, covered by CIO on 21 August 2025, was held at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre. Its winners included Alexandra Smart of Southern Cross Travel Insurance (CIO of the Year), Stasha Rmandic of Whakarongorau Aotearoa (Emerging ICT Leader), AA Insurance, Auckland Transport, Hamilton City Council, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Digital Future Aotearoa and Elle Archer.

The category structure changed in 2026. “Innovation for Impact and Purpose” replaced the previous “Community Tech Champions” framing, and the 2026 results placed stronger visible emphasis on AI-enabled operations, cyber maturity, digital twins and workforce culture. Comparisons should therefore focus on the underlying outcomes, not assume identical categories from one year to the next.

What prospective entrants should document

The official criteria favour implemented initiatives and observed outcomes over vendor-product promotion. A strong entry should show:

  1. The problem and baseline: Explain the business, public-service or social need and provide the starting measure.
  2. The intervention: Describe what changed in technology, process, operating model and governance.
  3. Adoption obstacles: Show how security, data quality, workforce concerns and implementation risks were handled.
  4. Quantified outcomes: Report cost, productivity, adoption, service, resilience, environmental or participation results with dates and measurement methods.
  5. Stakeholder impact: Include customers, citizens, employees, partners and communities—not only the project team.
  6. Inclusion and accountability: Explain accessibility, cultural relevance, workforce effects and who owns decisions made with AI or other emerging tools.
  7. Transferable learning: State what another organisation could reuse and what remains specific to your context.

What happens next

The organiser’s site now promotes the next summit and awards for 9–11 August 2027. Dates, ticket terms and discounts can change, so prospective attendees should check the official CIO Innovation Summit site rather than rely on 2026 offers.

For 2026, the published awards page listed an individual gala ticket at NZ$399 plus GST, a table of 10 at NZ$3,990 plus GST, and a table of 10 for non-sponsoring vendors and industry service providers at NZ$6,499 plus GST, with payment stated as due by 31 July 2026. Those were event-specific terms. Tech New Zealand members were offered 20% off 2026 summit and cyber-risk-conference tickets with code TechNZ20; its future validity is not established.
