Universal led the 2023 worldwide box office in Rotten Tomatoes’ comparison of wide releases, while Disney’s highest-ranked film in the European Audiovisual Observatory’s ranking of movies released that year was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, in fourth place. Those are different measures: one compares studio release totals, the other ranks individual films.
Which studio led the worldwide box office in 2023?
Rotten Tomatoes’ year-end comparison says Universal had the highest box-office total among wide releases, at more than $2.5 billion, and led both its domestic and worldwide comparisons. The outlet credits hits including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer, alongside Universal releases such as Fast X, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Trolls Band Together, M3GAN and The Exorcist: Believer. This is a wide-release comparison, not a definitive ledger of every film or every distributor’s revenue; the exact studio-total margin over Disney is not established on a directly comparable basis. What were the biggest movies of 2023?
The European Audiovisual Observatory’s FOCUS 2024: World Film Market Trends ranks films released in 2023 by worldwide gross box office. Its figures are estimated U.S. dollars in millions, cumulative as of January 1, 2024, and draw on The Numbers and LUMIERE/OBS. The leading positions were:

How much did the top films gross?
Box Office Mojo’s currently consulted 2023 worldwide calendar-year table lists these film-level totals. They are database values consulted in 2026, not studio totals:

The Associated Press reported $845.6 million worldwide for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on December 27, 2023. That rounded contemporaneous figure differs slightly from Box Office Mojo’s currently listed amount, a reminder that source and date matter when quoting grosses. Box Office Mojo’s 2023 worldwide table lists its current figures; the Associated Press year-end report supplies the contemporaneous figure and broader audience context.

Did Disney have a weak box-office year?
Not necessarily. Losing the aggregate lead does not mean every Disney release performed poorly. In the same Rotten Tomatoes comparison, Walt Disney Studios had the highest average box office per wide release, at more than $175 million. That average is the outlet’s own comparison metric; it is not Disney’s total gross and cannot be compared directly with Universal’s $2.5-billion-plus aggregate. The outlet highlights Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Elemental in that context. Rotten Tomatoes’ comparison describes both the wide-release totals and per-release averages.

There is no single number that answers every version of “Who won?” A film’s worldwide gross is different from a studio’s combined total. Studio comparisons can also depend on which releases count as wide releases, distributor attribution, the data source and the date totals are collected. The Observatory’s ranking is an estimate with a January 1, 2024 cutoff; Box Office Mojo’s figures are current database entries consulted in 2026; Rotten Tomatoes presents a separate studio comparison. They should not be merged as if they were one dataset.

Calendar-year box-office results are also distinct from a company’s fiscal-year reporting. Disney’s investor-relations page for its fiscal full-year and fourth-quarter 2023 results is a financial-reporting reference, not a substitute for a calendar-year film ranking. Disney’s fiscal 2023 earnings webcast page identifies that reporting context.
The AP framed the year’s top three—Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer—as part of a wider shift in audience tastes. It also cautioned against treating superhero films as a dead genre: one year’s rankings show a change in the mix of hits, not proof that audiences have permanently abandoned a category.
