Disney reported that Disney+ had 0.7 million fewer subscribers at the end of its fiscal first quarter than in the previous quarter, closing the period with 125 million. The quarter ended December 28, 2024—not December 31. Meanwhile, Disney’s combined Disney+ and Hulu subscription count increased.
How many subscribers did Disney+ lose?
Disney reported a sequential decrease of 0.7 million Disney+ subscribers, or about 700,000, in fiscal Q1 2025. The service had 125 million subscribers at the quarter’s end, December 28, 2024. Disney announced the results on February 5, 2025. Disney’s earnings release reports the figures.
“Close out 2024” refers to the last three months of calendar 2024. Disney’s prior fiscal quarter ended September 28, 2024, so the comparison is between those two reporting dates—not between calendar-year totals.
Why the Disney+ and Hulu numbers tell different stories
The decline was for Disney+ alone. Disney separately reported 178 million combined Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, up 0.9 million from the previous quarter. The standalone Disney+ count and the combined subscription count measure different totals; the combined increase does not mean Disney+ itself gained subscribers.

How to interpret the quarter-to-quarter comparison
Disney’s previous release reported 122.7 million Disney+ Core subscribers at September 28, 2024. Its Q1 FY2025 release reported 125 million Disney+ subscribers. Disney noted that it adjusted prior-quarter sequential metrics to include Southeast Asia subscribers previously reported with Disney+ Hotstar. After the Star India transaction, Hotstar was no longer presented in the same way. As a result, the 0.7 million decrease is Disney’s reported sequential movement; the category presentation was not entirely unchanged between reports. What the subscriber loss means for Disney’s business
Revenue per paid subscriber rose
Disney+ average monthly revenue per paid subscriber was $7.55 in Q1 FY2025, up from $7.20 in the prior quarter. Disney attributed the increase to pricing and higher advertising revenue, partly offset by a higher mix of promotional subscribers. The revenue-per-subscriber change does not establish why the subscriber count fell; Disney’s reported figures do not identify a specific cause for the decline.

Direct-to-Consumer income improved
Disney reported $293 million in Entertainment Direct-to-Consumer operating income for Q1 FY2025, compared with a $138 million loss in the year-ago quarter—a $431 million improvement. This is a broader DTC result, not profit attributable solely to Disney+. Disney’s earnings release also quoted CEO Bob Iger saying, “Overall, this quarter proved to be a strong start to the fiscal year, and we remain confident in our strategy for continued growth.” That broad statement is not an explanation of the subscriber decline.

In its February 5, 2025 announcement, Disney forecast a “Modest decline in Disney+ subscribers compared to Q1” for fiscal Q2 2025. This was guidance for the following quarter, not a current forecast.
