Approved applicants can fund the deposit all at once or in qualifying installments over 35 days. The card also advertises activated 5% rotating-category cash back, 1% on other purchases, and a first-year Cashback Match for new cardholders.
What is the minimum deposit for a Discover secured card?
Discover lists deposit tiers of $49, $99, or $200 based on creditworthiness. Its headline offer says a deposit as low as $49 can unlock a starting credit line of at least $200. The $49 figure is the lowest possible deposit, not a deposit every applicant will receive. The approved deposit must be funded within 35 days of approval. Discover’s current product page and FAQs also say the deposit serves as collateral; it does not pay the monthly card bill.
Can you pay the security deposit over time?
Yes. Discover allows an approved deposit to be paid in full or in increments during the 35-day funding period. Each payment must be at least $20, use whole-dollar increments, and be made online by electronic funds transfer from a bank account. The $20 minimum applies to each installment, not to the total required deposit.
What rewards does the Discover it Secured card earn?
Ongoing cash back
The current offer advertises 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories when activated, up to the applicable quarterly maximum, and 1% on other purchases. NerdWallet’s October 6, 2026 report says the new categories apply to up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter. Category details and the spending limit can vary over time, so check the issuer’s current offer and activate eligible categories before spending. NerdWallet’s report on the relaunch provides the $1,500 quarterly cap; Discover’s product page supports the current reward rates.

First-year Cashback Match
Discover advertises an unlimited dollar-for-dollar match for eligible cash back earned by new cardholders during their first 365 days. The issuer says the match is added within two billing periods. Specified rewards are excluded, and the offer may not be available in the future; consult the current offer terms for the exclusions and conditions.
How the new terms differ from the former card
NerdWallet reports that the earlier version required a $200 minimum deposit and earned 2% at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined quarterly purchases, plus 1% elsewhere. Under the new structure it describes, cardholders can earn 5% in activated quarterly categories on up to $1,500 in category purchases per quarter, plus 1% elsewhere.

NerdWallet says the reported changes apply to new cardholders; existing cardholders can continue using the prior card under its former terms. Discover’s current page confirms the new offer but does not provide this full legacy comparison. Existing customers should check their account terms rather than assume the new deposit or rewards structure applies to them.

Discover says a positive track record may lead to a deposit refund and an upgrade, but its current page does not promise a specific graduation date. Another refund path is closing the account with the balance paid in full. Treat the deposit as money tied up as collateral until Discover returns it; do not count on a particular refund date.

What else to check before applying
- Approval and credit scores: Discover says a credit score is not required to apply, though it may use available scores.
- Credit reporting: The issuer says it reports account status to the three major credit bureaus. Credit-building results are not guaranteed and depend in part on responsible account use.
- Current rewards: Rotating categories require activation, and the quarterly cap and category list matter when estimating rewards. Verify the active quarter’s terms before relying on a category.
- Other account terms: Review the current application disclosures for fees and other terms; the information summarized here does not establish every cost or condition.
