A 67-year-old woman in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, allegedly lost ₹13 lakh after callers posing as police threatened her over WhatsApp, according to Mint’s 6 October 2026 report, which attributes the case to The Times of India. The practical lesson is clear: a video call, uniform or official-looking accusation does not prove a caller is genuine. Do not transfer money to resolve an alleged investigation or avoid arrest. Pause, verify independently and report suspected fraud promptly.
What happened in the reported case?
Mint reported that WhatsApp calls came between 23 and 30 September. The callers allegedly claimed to be police officials and said the woman’s bank account was linked to an account suspected of terrorism. She reportedly transferred ₹8 lakh through RTGS on 29 September and another ₹5 lakh to a different account the next day. She later approached authorities after realizing she had allegedly been duped. These are details reported by Mint, which attributes the account to The Times of India; they should not be read as independently verified police findings.
What is a digital arrest scam?
It is an impersonation and coercion tactic: a caller poses as a police officer or another authority, makes a frightening allegation and pressures the target to pay or comply. India’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) says scammers may impersonate police, the CBI, narcotics officials, the RBI, the Enforcement Directorate and other agencies. The allegations may involve a parcel supposedly containing illegal goods or a relative supposedly in custody after a crime or accident. Some victims are kept visible on video calls while scammers use police-station-like studios and uniforms to look convincing, according to the MHA’s 14 May 2024 alert.
A caller’s claimed identity and visuals are not reliable verification. The MHA describes “digital arrest” as a scam pattern; do not treat a demand for money as a legitimate way to settle a criminal case.

Five money lessons for senior citizens
1. Do not pay to avoid arrest
Mint says there is no such thing as “digital arrest” in Indian law and warns against callers demanding money to settle a criminal proceeding or prevent arrest. Treat any such payment demand as a reason to stop and verify—not as a deadline to meet.
2. Break the pressure before deciding
Do not transfer money while frightened, rushed or being kept on a call. End or pause the conversation and speak with a trusted person. Verify serious allegations independently before taking financial action, as Mint advises.

3. Do not accept video or paperwork as proof
A uniform, video call, document or police-station-style background can be staged. The MHA has specifically warned about fake police-style studios and uniforms. Verify the claim through an official contact route you find yourself, rather than relying on material or numbers supplied by the caller.
4. Keep banking credentials private
Never give a caller an OTP, PIN, password, card details or net-banking information—even if the person claims to represent a government agency or your bank. A legitimate-sounding accusation does not make it safe to disclose credentials.

5. Verify and report through independent channels
Find the bank or police contact details independently from an official source. Do not call a number provided by the person making the accusation. Mint advises contacting the nearest police station or bank using an independently verified number; the MHA also advises reporting cyber fraud to 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in.
If you have already sent money
- Contact your bank promptly. Use an official number or channel you obtain independently, explain that you suspect fraud and ask what immediate steps it can take.
- Report the suspected cyber fraud. Call India’s cybercrime helpline 1930 or submit a report at cybercrime.gov.in, following the portal’s instructions.
- Keep relevant details available. Preserve transaction information and communications that may help you explain what happened to the bank and authorities.
The Government says the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System was launched to enable immediate reporting intended to help stop the siphoning of funds; reports and subsequent action are handled by the relevant State or Union Territory law-enforcement agencies, according to an MHA parliamentary reply. Reporting quickly matters, but it does not guarantee that money will be traced or recovered. The PIB account of a 9 June 2026 NHRC discussion notes that recovery can be lengthy, costly and distressing.

How large is the reported problem?
At the NHRC discussion reported by PIB on 9 June 2026, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian cited Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre figures: about ₹52,976 crore in cyber-enabled fraud losses over six years, with nearly 8% attributed to digital-arrest scams. PIB said the figures were reportedly compiled by I4C from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. These are qualified, cumulative figures cited at that discussion—not an annual rate or an independently audited estimate.

A quick check before acting on an alarming call
- Independent route: Can you verify the claim using contact details found through an official source, rather than a number the caller gave you?
- Money or credentials: Is the caller demanding a transfer, OTP, PIN, password or banking information? Do not comply.
- Pressure tactics: Are you being rushed, threatened or told to remain on video? Stop the interaction and seek help from someone you trust.
