Re:

Did YMTC Really Lead Samsung and Micron in 3D NAND?

YMTC’s 232-layer NAND marked a real commercial milestone, not an overall victory over Samsung and Micron. The difference comes down to availability, scale, economics, and access.

YMTC briefly led a narrow race: in November 2022, TechInsights identified its 232-layer NAND in a commercially available SSD, making it the first publicly identified 200-layer-plus NAND product on the market. That did not make YMTC the overall NAND leader. Micron had announced and begun shipping its own 232-layer NAND months earlier, while Samsung and Micron retained much greater scale and established customer networks.

The distinction matters to investors and storage buyers: a striking chip-generation milestone is not the same as lower costs, reliable high-volume production, broad customer qualification, or market dominance. Evidence reported through 2026 shows that YMTC survived and grew, but remains smaller than Samsung and faces constraints on equipment and international access.

What “lead” meant in 2022

“Lead” can refer to several different races in NAND: announcing a design, starting production, shipping a product, achieving the best density or cost per bit, or selling the most memory. Those are not interchangeable. YMTC’s strongest claim in late 2022 was commercial availability: TechInsights found its 232-layer Xtacking 3.0 NAND in a HikSemi CC700 SSD and called it the first 200-layer-plus NAND solution available on the market. TechInsights’ finding and its technical analysis establish a product milestone, not an overall company ranking.

Micron’s earlier announcement does not contradict that finding. On July 26, 2022, Micron said its 232-layer NAND was in production and shipping, describing it as the first 232-layer NAND in production. That is a company statement about its own product and production status, not proof that a retail SSD containing it was identified before YMTC’s. Micron’s announcement also reported a package 28% smaller than its previous generation and applications across mobile, client storage, cloud computing, and AI workloads; those are Micron’s claims.

YMTC unveiled the X3-9070, based on Xtacking 3.0, on August 2, 2022. TechInsights’ November identification then supplied public evidence of a 232-layer product in a market SSD. EE Times’ December 9 analysis questioned how durable the lead would be. YMTC’s announcement and the EE Times analysis mark different points in that timeline.

Date Milestone What it establishes
July 26, 2022 Micron announced and said it was shipping 232-layer NAND. Micron’s announced production and shipping status; not a retail-product comparison.
August 2, 2022 YMTC unveiled X3-9070 with Xtacking 3.0. A product announcement, not by itself evidence of broad availability.
November 2022 TechInsights identified YMTC 232-layer NAND in a HikSemi CC700 SSD. A publicly identified commercial SSD containing 200-layer-plus NAND.
December 9, 2022 EE Times examined whether YMTC’s lead could last. Analyst concern about the economics and constraints facing a fast-growing supplier.

How Xtacking works—and what it does not prove

YMTC’s Xtacking approach fabricates the memory array and its peripheral circuitry on separate wafers, then bonds them using many metal interconnects. The peripheral circuitry handles functions such as data input/output and memory-cell operations. Separating it from the array can let YMTC optimize the logic and memory portions independently and may improve array efficiency, density, or I/O performance. YMTC describes the architecture on its company site.

This is not simply a claim that “two wafers make one chip,” nor does wafer bonding guarantee a cheaper or faster finished product. The additional bonding, alignment, and process-control steps add complexity and potential yield risk. Without comparable cost, yield, and performance data, the architecture’s advantages should be treated as potential design benefits, not proof that YMTC had a lower-cost product.

Why layer count is an incomplete comparison

A layer count is a useful generation marker, but it does not measure the amount of usable data per die or the quality of an SSD built around that die. Vendors and analysts may also describe structures differently, so active-layer counts and total-layer counts should not be treated as identical unless the source defines them. A teardown-based comparison can consider die size, bit density, active layers, word-line pitch, and other physical details; TechInsights’ comparison framework illustrates why one headline number cannot settle the ranking.

  • Capacity and cost: Bit density, die size, wafer cost, and the share of wafers that yield usable dies drive cost per bit.
  • Architecture: Plane and block organization affect parallelism and how a device handles workloads.
  • Performance: Interface speed, read and program behavior, controller quality, firmware, and thermal management influence real SSD performance.
  • Reliability: Error-correction needs, endurance, sustained-write behavior, and qualification matter for the intended workload.
  • Product fit: TLC and QLC NAND serve different trade-offs, and a NAND die is only one part of a client or enterprise SSD.

For a storage buyer, the SSD’s controller, firmware, warranty, and validated performance are usually more actionable than the layer count of its NAND. A retail SSD may use a third-party controller and firmware even when its NAND comes from YMTC or another manufacturer.

Why a product lead did not make YMTC the market leader

Samsung’s advantage was not necessarily being first to a publicly identified 232-layer retail SSD in late 2022. It was its manufacturing scale, established global customers, broad product portfolio, and experience integrating NAND into SSDs, phones, servers, and consumer devices. Scale and customer qualification can make a supplier commercially stronger even when a competitor has a higher layer count in a particular snapshot. A dated layer-count comparison should not be turned into a timeless technology ranking.

Micron’s July 2022 232-layer announcement also shows why the terms “announced,” “in production,” “shipping,” and “available in a particular product” need separate treatment. It had an important technology and production claim before YMTC’s market identification, while TechInsights’ finding concerned a product available in an SSD. Neither fact alone proves which supplier had better yields, more volume, or lower cost.

The central test was cost, yield, and repeatable scale

For YMTC, the strategic question was whether Xtacking’s density and performance could translate into competitive cost per usable bit at sufficient yield and volume. A bonded-wafer process may require extra steps and tight alignment control. Any yield loss can offset density gains, while NAND’s cyclical pricing can make a technically advanced product difficult to monetize if it arrives during a downturn.

Analyst Jim Handy of Objective Analysis questioned how a two-wafer design could compete economically with a comparable die made on one wafer. EE Times also reported TechInsights’ concern that YMTC’s revenue might not fund indefinitely rising R&D costs. These are analyst assessments, not published comparative cost or yield measurements. Objective Analysis’ commentary and the EE Times report frame the concern; they do not establish YMTC’s actual cost per bit.

Domestic Chinese demand and procurement can support production and provide customers, but they are not equivalent to qualification by global hyperscalers, PC makers, and other large customers. Government support may help a company sustain investment, but it does not by itself solve manufacturing yield, equipment access, or buyer acceptance.

What U.S. export controls changed

In October 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security announced controls on advanced semiconductor-manufacturing items, including restrictions relevant to NAND flash with 128 layers or more. YMTC was added to the U.S. Entity List in December 2022. The practical effect is broader than losing access to a single machine: restrictions can affect equipment, components, servicing, software, and technical support. BIS’s announcement describes the controls; TrendForce’s December 2022 analysis discussed the resulting obstacles to YMTC’s technology and expansion plans.

The controls did not mean existing fabs instantly shut down. They made expansion and transitions to later generations harder by constraining access to parts of a globally integrated equipment and service ecosystem. Domestic Chinese equipment can reduce dependence, but it should not be assumed to match the breadth, maturity, or throughput of the international supply chain immediately.

Patent exposure is a separate risk

The 2022 analysis also raised the possibility of patent disputes if YMTC products entered the U.S. market. That was a risk scenario, not a finding that YMTC products infringed patents. Patent questions can concern manufacturing processes, memory architecture, bonding, controllers, packaging, or firmware. A customer importing or selling a product can face legal and licensing questions distinct from the chipmaker’s own status under export controls. No infringement conclusion follows from the Entity List designation.

What the record shows through 2026

YMTC did not disappear after its 2022 milestone. Recent secondary reporting describes it as a significant producer, with a later-generation Xtacking product around 267 layers in mass production and roughly 14% NAND market share. The figures are reported estimates, not audited disclosures by YMTC; layer-count terminology and market-share measurement periods should be checked before direct comparisons. Tom’s Hardware’s report describes the top-three milestone and 267-layer figure.

A separate EE Times report cites a 2025 market-share snapshot of 11.8% for YMTC, 30.4% for Samsung, 16% for SK hynix, 15.9% for Kioxia, and 13.3% for Micron. These are reported market estimates, not company-audited figures, and should not be merged with the roughly 14% estimate as if both used the same period or methodology. EE Times’ market and fab report supplies that comparison. The reporting indicates that YMTC gained meaningful scale while Samsung remained substantially larger; it does not establish a direct comparison of profitability, cost per bit, or customer qualification.

YMTC’s official company profile and product list provide company context, but procurement teams should confirm current product availability, specifications, support, and regional qualifications directly. For enterprise or OEM use, assess the exact NAND and SSD configuration, controller and firmware support, endurance validation, warranty, supply continuity, and any applicable customer or regulatory restrictions. A potential price advantage is not enough if a deployment requires global support or long-term firmware updates.
