Walmart later said a system error affected a small group of orders. The reports do not show that every order was cancelled, establish a total number affected, or explain the reason for every individual case.
What happened to Walmart Switch 2 pre-orders?
Reports of cancellations surfaced in May 2025 and again in the days before launch. On May 6, NintendoSoup described customer accounts of cancelled Walmart orders, including some reports of deleted accounts; it said Walmart had not provided an official explanation at that time. Some customers speculated about anti-scalper systems, but that was not confirmed. NintendoSoup’s May 6 report

On June 3, Gizmodo reported additional cancellation notices and quoted Walmart as saying: “We have identified a small group of customers whose orders were unfortunately affected by a system error. We recognize how exciting this new product launch is and are working to ensure these customers are taken care of.” Gizmodo’s June 3 report
That statement confirms Walmart identified a system error affecting a small group, but it does not establish that every reported cancellation had the same cause. Walmart did not give a count in the cited coverage, and the available reports do not provide a verified total.

Why were orders cancelled?
Walmart’s explanation for the group it identified was a system error. The sources do not establish a cause for every customer’s cancellation. High demand and retailer website problems were part of the preorder period, but neither proves why a particular Walmart order was cancelled.
The Associated Press reported that Walmart’s Switch 2 preorder listings sold out quickly after preorders opened on April 24, 2025, amid high demand and problems across retailers’ websites. Walmart said customers would have another opportunity to buy on June 5. That launch context is not evidence that an inventory shortage caused any individual cancellation. What to do if your Walmart order was cancelled
- Check the order in your Walmart account. Confirm its current status directly rather than relying only on a message or a social-media explanation.
- Contact Walmart about that order. Ask what happened and whether any remedy is available for your specific case.
- Do not assume the order will be reinstated or replaced. The cited reports do not promise reinstatement, replacement stock, compensation, or a standard resolution.
Nintendo’s support page explains cancellation timing for digital game pre-orders made through Nintendo eShop: those can be cancelled only seven or more days before the game’s release. That guidance concerns digital software associated with a Nintendo Account, not a physical console pre-order placed with Walmart. Nintendo’s eShop game pre-order guidance
