Vimeo confirmed a layoff announcement on January 20, 2026, but did not disclose how many employees were affected. Former employees described the cuts as extensive; the claim that Vimeo laid off “most” of its staff has not been confirmed by a public headcount. A separate December 2025 layoff was later confirmed by Vimeo’s general manager. The rounds should not be combined into a single count.
What happened, and when?
Vimeo went through multiple workforce reductions around its acquisition. The dates matter: one reduction preceded the deal, a later layoff occurred in December 2025, and Bending Spoons confirmed a January 2026 announcement.
- September 3, 2025: Vimeo announced a reduction of just under 10% of its global full-time headcount, citing focus and efficiency. The company’s proxy materials said Bending Spoons was not involved in that decision. (Vimeo definitive proxy materials)
- September 10, 2025: Vimeo announced an agreement to be acquired by Bending Spoons for approximately $1.38 billion in cash. (SEC proxy materials)
- November 24, 2025: The deal closed, and Vimeo became a wholly owned subsidiary of Bending Spoons US. The SEC filing describes aggregate cash consideration of approximately $1.38 billion. (SEC Form 8-K)
- December 2025: Vimeo general manager Marco Castello later confirmed a separate layoff in December, without disclosing the number affected. (Fast Company interview, October 7, 2026)
- January 20, 2026: Bending Spoons confirmed that a layoff was announced at Vimeo that day. (Engadget)
Did Vimeo lay off most of its staff?
That scale is not established by a company-published figure in the cited coverage. Bending Spoons told Engadget: “I can confirm that a layoff was announced at Vimeo on January 20, 2026. To respect the privacy of those departing, we cannot provide additional details at this time.” TechCrunch likewise reported that the company did not provide a headcount. (TechCrunch, January 22, 2026)
Former Vimeo vice president Dave Brown said a large portion of the company was affected, and another former employee wrote that “almost everyone” was laid off. Those are employee accounts, not an independently verified total. The available reporting does not support a precise number or percentage for either the December or January round. How did the acquisition change Vimeo’s teams?
In an October 2026 interview, Castello offered a more specific account of the post-acquisition structure. He said Vimeo retained the majority of its specialized sales, customer support, and Staff Picks curation teams, while Bending Spoons engineers, developers, and product managers took over technical and product operations. He also said Vimeo could not provide the number of people affected. (Fast Company, October 7, 2026)
Bending Spoons is identified in SEC materials as a technology company. Calling it a private-equity firm, as some headlines do, is shorthand: Fast Company says its acquisition and restructuring approach has drawn comparisons to private equity, but that is not the company classification in the SEC filing. What does this mean for Vimeo customers?
The staffing changes do not, by themselves, establish that Vimeo has stopped operating or that service quality will decline. In March 2026, Vimeo described ongoing plans for creator, enterprise, and streaming products and stated that generative AI models would not train on hosted videos without explicit consent. That is Vimeo’s stated policy and roadmap, not an independent guarantee of future performance. (Vimeo, March 18, 2026)
Castello told Fast Company that by May 2026 Vimeo had fixed more than 100 bugs and delivered more than 50 improvements, including work on search, loading, and upload speed. These are company-provided figures, not independently measured performance results. He also said changes to Vimeo’s caption-service provider expanded supported languages from 7 to 99. Customers deciding whether to stay should assess their own needs rather than infer a service outcome from the layoffs alone. Relevant checks include the reliability and support commitments in their plan, privacy and embed controls, accessibility and caption needs, team collaboration, and whether their videos can be exported and migrated if they choose another host.
