Stoke City paid a reported £5 million for Tuncay Şanlı in August 2009, but the available reports do not establish that the club later sold him for enough to make a £5 million profit. They confirm a Wolfsburg offer in January 2011, not an accepted fee or completed sale price. The claims that Liverpool and Chelsea “dodged a bullet” also need qualification: Liverpool interest was reported by Tuncay, while Chelsea was linked with him, but neither source confirms a formal bid.
What Stoke paid for Tuncay
Stoke confirmed Tuncay’s signing on 28 August 2009, with Sky Sports reporting a £5 million fee. Middlesbrough had signed him from Fenerbahçe on a free transfer, according to The Guardian’s contemporary coverage. Sky Sports reported Stoke’s signing and fee; The Guardian reported Middlesbrough’s earlier free transfer.
That £5 million is the reported purchase fee, not evidence of a later profit. To calculate a transfer profit, the relevant sale proceeds and accounting basis would also be needed. The January 2011 report located here does not supply either.
Did Stoke sell him for a profit?
In January 2011, Stoke manager Tony Pulis confirmed that the club had received an offer from Wolfsburg. The Guardian reported that Tuncay was frustrated by limited opportunities, but did not say that Stoke accepted the offer or give a completed transfer fee. The Guardian’s report confirms an offer, not Stoke’s proceeds.

- Comfortable fit: Regular fan version fit for game day, training, or casual wear. Breathable fabric: Lightweight material for comfortable everyday use. Classic soccer style: Detailed design with vibrant colors. Great gift: Perfect for soccer fans, birthdays, and holidays. Size notice: Runs small. Choose one or two sizes larger.
As a result, the claim that Middlesbrough’s Tuncay deal “landed £5m Stoke City profit” is not demonstrated by these reports. The £5 million purchase figure is documented; the later proceeds needed to substantiate that profit are not.
What was reported about Liverpool and Chelsea?
In June 2009, Tuncay told The Guardian that he had heard about Liverpool interest, but said “nothing official has arrived to me.” The report also said he had been linked with Chelsea; it does not document a formal Chelsea bid. The Guardian’s June report records the claim and the Chelsea links.

The same article estimated that Tuncay might cost around £8 million at the time. That was an estimate made before his eventual move to Stoke, not the completed Stoke fee: Sky Sports later reported the fee as £5 million. Neither the estimate nor the reports of interest establish that Liverpool or Chelsea made an offer.
What Stoke said when it signed him
Stoke presented Tuncay as part of a double signing with Robert Huth from Middlesbrough. Chief executive Tony Scholes described the pair as “a powerful statement of our intentions as we look to move the club forward.” Manager Tony Pulis called Tuncay “an exciting player with his pace and skill who will certainly get the crowd going.” Those are the club’s expectations at the time, not evidence of a later transfer profit or a verdict on how other clubs would have fared by signing him. Sky Sports reproduced the club representatives’ comments.

What the evidence supports
- Stoke’s reported 2009 fee: £5 million.
- Liverpool: Tuncay said he had heard of interest, while stating that nothing official had reached him.
- Chelsea: described as linked with Tuncay; a bid is not established.
- Wolfsburg: an offer was reported in January 2011; the report does not establish an accepted offer, completed sale price or Stoke profit.
“Dodged a bullet” is therefore opinion, not a conclusion established by the transfer reports. A firm comparison of what Chelsea or Liverpool avoided would require a separate assessment of Tuncay’s performances and the clubs’ alternatives; the evidence cited here establishes neither that broader judgment nor Stoke’s claimed £5 million profit.
