No. Standard Chartered PLC’s H1 2025 results show higher earnings than in H1 2024, not a 23% decline. For the six months ended 30 June 2025, underlying earnings per share rose 41% to 139.2 cents and reported earnings per share rose 55% to 129.1 cents. The company released the results on 31 July 2025.

What Standard Chartered reported for H1 2025

The figures below compare the six months ended 30 June 2025 with the same period in 2024. The report presents both reported results and some constant-currency comparisons; those bases are not interchangeable.

Measure H1 2025 H1 2024 comparison
Underlying earnings per share 139.2 cents Up 41%
Reported earnings per share 129.1 cents Up 55%
Underlying profit before tax $4.7 billion Up 22% at constant currency
Reported profit before tax $4.4 billion Up 30% at constant currency
Underlying profit attributable to ordinary shareholders $3.307 billion $2.567 billion
Reported profit attributable to ordinary shareholders $3.065 billion $2.169 billion

These measures answer different questions: earnings per share expresses profit per share, profit before tax measures earnings before tax, and profit attributable to ordinary shareholders is the profit assigned to ordinary shareholders. Underlying and reported figures also use different definitions. The bank’s Half Year Report 2025 provides the figures and definitions.

Where the 23% decline claim stands

The official H1 2025 results do not substantiate a 23% fall in earnings. The company’s report instead records year-over-year increases in the measures above. The official materials reviewed do not identify the source or metric behind the 23% figure, so it should not be assigned to a particular result without supporting evidence.

Why costs and impairments do not mean earnings fell

Some H1 indicators did rise in ways that can sound negative when separated from the full income statement. Operating income increased 9% on a reported basis to $10.9 billion, expenses rose 5%, and the credit impairment charge increased to $336 million from $249 million in H1 2024. These are distinct items, not evidence by themselves of an overall earnings decline. The reported profit and EPS measures show the net outcome.

What the company said

In the official results transcript, Group Chief Executive Bill Winters said: “As a result, we delivered a 41 per cent increase in earnings per share in the first half and have announced a further buyback of $1.3 billion.” The statement refers to the first-half increase in earnings per share; the transcript is available in the 2025 Half Year Results Transcript.
