No: Airbus did not say 6,000 planes were grounded at once. It said around 6,000 A320-family aircraft could need a precautionary software and/or hardware modification after analysis indicated intense solar radiation may corrupt data important to flight controls. JetBlue Flight 1230 was bound for Newark, but diverted to Tampa after a pitch excursion. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) account is preliminary, so it does not establish a final cause.
What happened to JetBlue Flight 1230?
On October 30, 2025, JetBlue Flight 1230 was flying from Cancun to Newark aboard an Airbus A320-family aircraft, registration N605JB. At 35,000 feet over the Gulf of America, the aircraft experienced a pitch excursion and lost approximately 100 feet of altitude. The crew diverted to Tampa rather than continuing to Newark. Four flight attendants and 18 passengers sustained minor injuries, according to the NTSB preliminary report.
The report describes the event; it is not a final determination of why it happened. The aircraft was not reported as physically burned or “fried.” Airbus later described a possible data-corruption mechanism associated with intense solar radiation, not physical damage to the aircraft.
Did solar radiation ground 6,000 planes?
No. On November 28, 2025, Airbus said analysis of an A320-family event indicated that intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to flight controls. It requested immediate precautionary action by operators, using available software and/or hardware protection. Airbus identified around 6,000 aircraft as potentially impacted; that figure describes aircraft potentially requiring modification, not aircraft all grounded simultaneously. See Airbus’s November 28 fleet-action announcement.

Airbus’s wording matters: radiation “may” corrupt critical data. The statement does not establish that solar radiation definitively caused the JetBlue incident, that every potentially affected aircraft experienced a problem, or that 6,000 aircraft were taken out of service at once.
What did the fleet action involve?
Airbus asked operators to install available software and/or hardware protection as a precaution. This was an aircraft maintenance and technical modification action, not a consumer-product recall. Its scope was the A320 family and potentially impacted aircraft—not every airplane in service.

On December 1, Airbus said the vast majority of the potentially impacted fleet had received modifications and fewer than 100 aircraft remained to be modified. That update is inconsistent with the claim that all 6,000 were simultaneously grounded; it describes a modification rollout. See Airbus’s December 1 deployment update.
How the headline differs from the verified record
| Headline claim | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| “JetBlue Newark Flight” | Newark was Flight 1230’s planned destination. It diverted to Tampa after the pitch excursion, according to the NTSB preliminary report. |
| “Fried By Radiation” | Airbus said intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to flight controls. That is a potential data-corruption mechanism, not a finding that the aircraft was physically fried or a final finding about the incident’s cause. |
| “Emergency Grounding Of 6,000 Planes” | Around 6,000 A320-family aircraft were potentially impacted and subject to precautionary modification. Airbus later said fewer than 100 remained to be modified; the sources do not say all 6,000 were grounded at the same time. |
| “Mass Recalls” | The described action was an operator-directed software and/or hardware protection modification, not a consumer recall. |
What is known—and not yet established—about the cause
The NTSB preliminary report supports the flight details, altitude loss, diversion, and minor injuries. Airbus’s statement provides its explanation for the precautionary fleet action: intense solar radiation may corrupt flight-control-critical data. Neither source, as cited here, establishes a final investigative conclusion that radiation caused the JetBlue pitch excursion. The available record should therefore be described as a preliminary event report followed by a manufacturer’s precautionary fleet action, not a settled causal finding.

A separate JetBlue Flight 1230 listing is a different event
The FAA statements page also lists a JetBlue Flight 1230 event at Newark on September 26, 2024, involving a possible hydraulic issue. That entry is separate from the October 30, 2025 Cancun-to-Newark flight and the subsequent A320-family radiation-related fleet action; the two should not be conflated.
