Sheffield United may have negotiated a future share of David Brooks’ transfer value, but the available reports do not establish that the club received an eight-figure windfall—or confirm any Brooks-related sell-on payment. Bournemouth’s 2018 announcement said the fee was undisclosed; contemporary media reports estimated it at £10 million to £11.5 million.

How much did Bournemouth pay for David Brooks?

The official figure was not made public. The Premier League’s 1 July 2018 announcement said Bournemouth signed Brooks from Sheffield United on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. It also noted that the then-20-year-old had made 37 first-team appearances for Sheffield United.

Contemporary reporting supplied estimates, not an official confirmation. BBC Sport relayed a Bournemouth Echo report that the fee was £10 million, potentially rising to £11.5 million. Sky Sports reported a completed £11.5 million deal. Those accounts place the transfer in eight-figure territory, but neither changes the clubs’ undisclosed status into a confirmed sale price.

Did Sheffield United have a sell-on clause?

A Sheffield United-focused report published in June 2019 said the club had included a sell-on clause in its deal with Bournemouth. The report was discussing a possible Manchester United move for Brooks; it does not establish that such a transfer happened or that Sheffield United received money from it. The sources available do not state the clause’s percentage, trigger, or other terms, and do not verify a specific payment to Sheffield United.

Accordingly, “Sheffield United struck gold” is a possible interpretation of the clause, not a confirmed account of cash received. Without the terms and evidence of a triggering sale, there is no sound basis to calculate the club’s proceeds from the reported Bournemouth fee estimates.

Why did Brooks leave Manchester City?

Brooks had been in Manchester City’s academy before joining Sheffield United. In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, he recalled seeing many unfamiliar players at City’s under-18 level and said he was not getting the playing time he needed. That is Brooks’s account of his experience, not an official Manchester City explanation for his release.

What the transfer does—and does not—show about Sheffield United

Sheffield United had received sell-on fees connected to Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire, according to BBC Sport in 2017. That provides context for the club’s history with such clauses, but it does not confirm the Brooks clause’s terms or its value. A separate deal’s proceeds cannot be used to infer what Sheffield United earned from Brooks.

The supported financial picture is therefore limited: Bournemouth’s official announcement left the transfer fee undisclosed; media estimates put the fee between £10 million and £11.5 million; and a 2019 report said the deal included a sell-on clause. The sources do not establish that Sheffield United subsequently collected a Brooks-related payment.
