Yes—Satya Nadella officially announced that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman would join Microsoft. The plan, posted by Microsoft on November 19, 2023 and widely reported on November 20 in U.S. time zones, was for the OpenAI leaders and colleagues to lead a new advanced AI research team. It was a real announcement, but not the final outcome: Altman returned to OpenAI as CEO and Greg Brockman returned as president later that month.
What Nadella actually announced
Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said Sam Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, “together with colleagues,” would join Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. Microsoft said it would move quickly to provide the team with the resources it needed. Nadella also reaffirmed Microsoft’s continuing partnership with OpenAI.

The wording described a proposed employment and research arrangement. It did not announce that Microsoft had acquired OpenAI, that every OpenAI employee had been hired, or that Microsoft had taken control of the company. Read the original statement and its subsequent updates on Microsoft’s official page.
Why Microsoft made the announcement
The announcement came during an exceptionally fast-moving OpenAI leadership crisis. OpenAI’s board announced on November 17, 2023, that Altman was leaving as CEO. The same announcement said Brockman would step down as board chair while remaining in his company role at that point. OpenAI’s notice is available at OpenAI’s November 17 announcement.

Microsoft was OpenAI’s major strategic partner and investor. When efforts to resolve the crisis appeared to be failing, Nadella publicly positioned Microsoft to employ Altman, Brockman and potentially other colleagues. That can reasonably be understood as an effort to retain important AI leadership and protect Microsoft’s AI strategy, although claims that Nadella intended to take over OpenAI are interpretations rather than established facts. Contemporary reporting described the proposed team and chronology, including Reuters reporting carried by Investing.com and TechCrunch’s report.
The timeline, day by day
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| November 17, 2023 | OpenAI announced Altman’s removal as CEO. Brockman was to step down as board chair, with the situation changing rapidly afterward. |
| November 19–20, 2023 | Nadella announced that Altman and Brockman, with colleagues, would join Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. Microsoft’s page is dated November 21 because it contains later updates, but it preserves the original statement as posted November 19. |
| November 21, 2023 | Microsoft updated its statement to say Nadella, Altman and Brockman had agreed that Altman and Brockman would have a key role in helping OpenAI continue to thrive. |
| November 29, 2023 | OpenAI announced Altman’s return as CEO and Brockman’s return as president, with a new initial board. |
| March 8, 2024 | OpenAI said a review had concluded and that Altman and Brockman would continue leading the company. |
Did Altman and Brockman ultimately join Microsoft?
No—not as the lasting outcome. They were announced as incoming leaders of a Microsoft research team, but the plan was overtaken within roughly a day by negotiations that led to their return to OpenAI. OpenAI’s November 29 announcement confirmed Altman was back as CEO and Brockman was back as president: OpenAI’s official announcement.

- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
That distinction explains why both of these statements can be true:
- Nadella really did announce that Altman and Brockman would join Microsoft.
- Altman and Brockman did not ultimately leave OpenAI to lead that Microsoft team.
Who is Greg Brockman?
Greg Brockman is an OpenAI co-founder and former president. During the November 2023 crisis, he was removed from the board chair role described in OpenAI’s initial announcement and was later named alongside Altman in Nadella’s proposed Microsoft team. OpenAI’s November 29 announcement identified him as returning president.

What happened to Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI?
The episode did not end the partnership. Altman thanked Nadella and Microsoft for being prepared to welcome the OpenAI team. Under the November 29 arrangement, Microsoft received a non-voting observer position on OpenAI’s new board. That gave Microsoft visibility into board proceedings, but it was not a normal voting seat and did not amount to formal control of OpenAI.

In March 2024, OpenAI said law firm WilmerHale had reviewed tens of thousands of documents and interviewed relevant participants. OpenAI’s published account said the prior board’s action followed a breakdown in trust with Altman; it also said the board had broad authority to terminate him, but that his conduct did not mandate removal. The review said the matter did not arise from concerns about product safety, security, development pace, finances or statements to stakeholders. OpenAI’s board expressed confidence in Altman and Brockman continuing to lead the company. This is OpenAI’s institutional account of the episode, not an uncontested independent reconstruction; the announcement is at OpenAI’s March 8, 2024 review notice.

How to read headlines about the episode
- “Nadella announced Altman and Brockman were joining Microsoft” is accurate when referring to the November 19–20 announcement.
- “Altman and Brockman joined Microsoft” is misleading as a final historical summary because both returned to OpenAI.
- “Microsoft acquired OpenAI” is not established by the announcements described here.
- “Everyone at OpenAI moved to Microsoft” is incorrect. Some employees threatened to resign and follow Altman, but a threatened departure is not proof of a completed migration.
- “Brockman was fired” oversimplifies the initial wording. OpenAI’s November 17 notice described him stepping down as board chair while remaining in his company role at that stage.
