Yes. Nike acquired TraceMe in 2019, the startup founded by Russell Wilson. Tally was TraceMe’s later sports-event engagement platform, not the company Nike acquired. Nike said the purchase would supplement content on its own platforms; the financial terms were not disclosed in the reporting reviewed.
What Nike acquired
TechCrunch reported on October 11, 2019, that Nike had acquired Seattle-based TraceMe, and Nike confirmed the deal to the publication. TraceMe’s first product was a fan app connecting users with athletes and other celebrities. The company later pivoted to Tally, a platform for sports teams, broadcasters, and venues to engage fans around live events. TechCrunch’s acquisition report describes both the company and the shift in its product.
That distinction explains the name variation: TraceMe was the startup; Tally was its later service. Marketing Dive reported that Tally let fans make predictions during live sports events. The resulting data feeds could appear in broadcasts, users could share activity on social media, and brand partners could offer prizes. Marketing Dive’s report describes those features.
Why Nike said it bought TraceMe
Nike’s stated reason was to support its content strategy on platforms it owned. A Nike spokesperson told TechCrunch by email: “NIKE, Inc. has acquired TraceMe to supplement the company’s content strategy on Nike-owned platforms.”

TechCrunch separately reported, citing a source, that the deal had closed in the weeks before the story and included intellectual property and team members. The source characterized TraceMe’s technology as more important to Nike than the Tally brand itself. That is attributed reporting about Nike’s priorities, not the company’s public explanation. TechCrunch also reported that at least eight employees, including CEO Jason LeeKeenan, listed Nike as their employer.
The confirmed rationale is narrower than some broader interpretations of the acquisition. The available reporting does not establish that Nike was building a separate media business, pursuing advertising revenue, or acquiring the company primarily to exploit fan data.
