On 29 October 1962, Jawaharlal Nehru acknowledged gold ornaments sent to the National Defence Fund, including four bangles, two rings and a nose-ring. But the available records do not establish that any of those particular items—or donated jewellery generally—are still physically held by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
What Nehru’s letter says about donated jewellery
In a letter dated 29 October 1962, Nehru thanked President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan for sending contributions to the National Defence Fund. Nehru wrote: “Thank you for your letter of today’s date, enclosing cash, cheques, postal orders and gold ornaments for the National Defence Fund.” He itemized the ornaments as four bangles, two rings and one nose-ring. The letter also records Rs. 16,088.50 in cash and cheques. Those details describe this contribution, not a nationwide total. Did the government appeal for gold and jewellery?
A November 1962 article in the government periodical Yojana urged people to give “CASH, GOLD and JEWELS” for the defence effort. It said gold and gold ornaments could be sent to State Bank of India branches and subsidiaries. That is direct evidence of a public campaign inviting jewellery contributions; it is more precise than attributing an unsourced appeal sentence to Nehru personally. How much gold did the National Defence Fund receive?
In 1965, the Rajya Sabha reported that the National Defence Fund received 22,77,109 grammes of gold and gold ornaments during 1962 and 1963. This is a combined two-year figure, not a 1962-only total. It covers gold and ornaments together, so it should not be described as a count of jewellery alone; nor does it establish how much, if any, remains today. Read the Rajya Sabha record.

Were contributions voluntary?
Nehru said that contributions were voluntary. In an April 14, 1963 letter to Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, he objected to a local official threatening people over non-payment and asked that no pressure or coercion be used. He wrote: “We have repeatedly stated that contributions of money and gold for the Defence Fund are entirely voluntary and no pressure or coercion should be used.” Read Nehru’s letter to Patnaik.
Does the RBI still hold the donated jewellery?
The Prime Minister’s Office says the National Defence Fund’s accounts are kept with the RBI. Its description of the fund’s present use refers to welfare for armed-forces personnel and their dependents. That establishes the RBI’s role in keeping the fund’s accounts; it does not show that the RBI holds specific ornaments donated in 1962, or that those objects remain intact. To establish present physical custody, a record would need to trace the jewellery itself—for example, an inventory or chain-of-custody documentation. The cited historical letters and parliamentary figure document contributions and receipts, while the PMO page describes account-keeping. They do not provide that object-level trace. So the supported conclusion is that people donated gold jewellery during the 1962 crisis; the claim that some of it is still in RBI custody is not established by these records.
