Did AI cause NaNoWriMo to close?
AI was part of the public controversy, but NaNoWriMo said the AI and content-moderation controversies did not directly lead to its demise. In 2024, the organization said it would neither explicitly support nor condemn writing approaches, including the use of AI. That position prompted criticism. The Washington Post reported that writing-software sponsor Ellipsus ended its sponsorship in response to NaNoWriMo’s AI statements.

Euronews attributed this statement to spokesperson Kilby Blades: “This is not the ending that anybody wanted or planned. And – believe us – if we could hit the delete button and rewrite this last chapter, we would. But we do have hope for the epilogue.”
The statement expressed hope, but it does not by itself confirm what programs, assets, or successor arrangements continued after the shutdown announcement.
